The screams, shouts, and students running to the PE shed with excited leaps and bounds every time we open it says it all!\r\nSoccer is a very popular sport at Mitchell and is played by Kindergarteners all the way up to 5th grade. Most recesses you can find at least 2 different groups of kids out on the field playing a pick-up game. Because it is so popular, having extra balls around is very important.\r\nThankfully, we have a PE teacher who is phenomenal and is teaching our students many different games, among them hula hooping. The students have learned not only how to hula hoop around their waist, but also how to flick it so it returns to you, rotate them around their arms and legs and more basically, how to push it on the black top to make it roll. The students have loved the different skills they have been taught and encourage each other to keep practicing. They set up challenges for each other to see how long they can hula hoop and compete against each other at recess! It is hilarious to watch and root them all on.\r\nThe balls and scoopers are another fantastic addition to our PE equipment because it teaches necessary hand-eye coordination. Another example is we are currently studying the Westward Expansion, including the Oregon Trail and Transcontinental Railroad. One of the books you got us was about the railroad. We have a personal connection here in our small city with that--our nickname is \"Rail City\" because the SPRR straightened the tracks and had to move their maintenance buildings and workers from a town 30 miles away. They dismantled the houses, dug up their trees, put them on flat train cars and shipped them here to reassemble a new town! Tomorrow, we are visiting our local museum.\r\nThank you for the white sentence strips and markers! In one of the pictures, you see a very rough draft of us writing about our city. We use the whiteboards, markers, and erasers constantly for solving problems, especially during multiplication and area lessons. I had a student who typically hesitates to participate eagerly come up and solve a problem on their whiteboard and proudly share their thinking with the class. That confidence boost was huge, and I truly believe having accessible, low-pressure tools like whiteboards made the difference.\r\n\r\nThey were beyond excited! There were lots of \"oohs\" and \"aahs\" when we opened everything. The \"squishies\" were an immediate fan favorite, and students were so motivated by the idea of earning them as rewards. The bean bag also quickly became a coveted spot in our reading corner—students are eager to read just for the chance to sit there. More than anything, they felt special. Many of my students don't often receive new supplies, so having fresh materials that are just for them created a sense of pride and excitement about being in our classroom.\r\n\r\nRight now, we are continuing to build strong math and writing skills as we prepare for our end-of-year assessments. We are using the whiteboards daily to practice multi-step math problems, allowing students to show their thinking and get immediate feedback.\r\n\r\nIn reading and writing, students are using our newly organized library to research topics and gather ideas for informational writing pieces. I was able to purchase many different prizes or incentives and have been able to share them with my administration and school counselor. We work together to support students, and these incentives have been a valuable tool to increase positive student behavior. \r\n\r\nStudents have loved all of the new prizes. There is a variety of incentives that appeals to boys, girls, and kindergartners through fifth graders. They have been working great as rewards and the students have been appreciated a little extra support on our not so comfy chairs.\r\n\r\nThe large whiteboards have been especially appreciated by me because they have allowed more room for all the work we do throughout the day. During ELA, students are able to share their thinking and answer the questions I write on them. Instead of immediately erasing it due to lack of board space, we are able to put them to the side and come back to them and continue our discussion as we complete our reading and work. During math, we are able to do a similar process as well as being able to answer problems in groups and have more workspace. We have also been using them to keep track of information we want to keep adding to. Such as listing out dates/events for our class timeline, keeping track of WPM reading scores, making lists, etc.\r\n\r\nLastly, the sitting desks are what my students have appreciated the most. They love being able to come down to the carpet and still have a solid surface they can do their work on. We use these throughout the entire day on all subjects. My students are always very eager to get the chance to use them, whether it is whole group time, working in partnerships, and doing their iReady lessons independently on them.
