Being a mom of an 11 year old daughter and a 9 year old son, I cringe every time I ask my students to sit still. I know that sometimes I am asking the impossible. That is why I want to introduce choice into my classroom. I want my students to be able to choose to sit next to the window for the natural light, move away from noisy neighbor or see the board clearer. By introducing wobble seats, balance balls and floor seats they can make that decision which in turn can have positive affects on their learning. There are so many beneficial reasons to have different seating choices in the classroom and the top ones for me are physical health, community, and communication. With society being engrossed in all the technology that has become available in the last decade, I feel that it has had a severe negative impact on our children. I have students that go home to play video games all afternoon and have little to no interaction with peers or adults. With the introduction of flexible seating, we will have the opportunity to learn patience, turn-taking, problem solving and conflict resolution. We will build a community in our classroom when we take ownership of our choices and share our resources.
