The books were a great addition to the AR Library we have in place. They have provided our K-5 students with a varied selection of genres to choose from as different students have different book choices. The nonfiction books that have been donated truly helped add to our limited supply of nonfiction materials. All students, except for Kindergarten, are required to read at least 10 nonfiction books and, now, with your donation, it has become less of a challenge to find these books. I am able, with your help, to provide these books that, after passing the AR quizzes, have helped students advance to the next level. Beginning at a second grade reading level, students are required to read chapter books. The chapter books, Dog Man series, have been the most popular by far. Two additional sets of these series next school year will make these books available to a greater number of students who are already into reading chapter books. Moreover, the \"I Am A.J.\" series by Dan Gutman and the The Dork Diary series that you have donated have likewise become popular among students. They are fun to read and most students are able to relate to the plot more than the fantasy genres, like the Magic Tree House series, that used to be popular about a decade ago. \r\n\r\nWe have great news. Per our Literacy Specialist, as of March of this year, we have 175 AR graduates, a number that already exceeded last year's number of graduates. Some of these graduates have moved up not just one, but two reading levels. This is because they have not only read at least 35 books, but they have read about 70 books on increasing book levels or have passed 70 AR quizzes. This is phenomenal success that we owe to this reading program, Accelerated Reader, and to your most generous donations. \r\n\r\nThis is our first year having Accelerated Reader as one of the Specials K-5 students go to on a 6-day rotation. My students have loved reading their new books. They love the Pigeon and Pete the Cat books. Many of my students struggle with reading fluency, so it was helpful to have more books at their AR level. These books allowed my students to have books with words that were easier for them to sound out, which allowed them to feel successful by being able to independently read books. These books have also helped 7 of my students graduate their AR levels! Having books that were both at their levels and enjoyable for them to read has allowed my students to develop a love for reading that I hope continues throughout their school careers. \r\n The place value boards and manipulatives also helped many of my students become more successful at adding and subtracting with regrouping. By being able to draw out the place value blocks and making sure that their numbers were aligned, my students were better able to understand when they had to regroup and why. Many of my students became successful at solving these problems independently, giving them more confidence in their math skills. \r\n Finally, I want to say thank you for the cushions and fidget toys. Many of my students struggle with staying still or focusing during lessons. The fidget toys provided them with a chance to quietly get this energy out without distracting their classmates. The cushion have allowed my students to be able to move around the classroom comfortably to read their AR books or complete their i-Ready lessons. Many students even use the cushions in their regular seats during lessons to provide more comfort.
