My students understand that being able to read and write is the key to having a future full of possibilities. Reading skills such as phonemic awareness, letter and sound identification, understanding syllables, and blending sounds to form words is the foundation for learning to read fluently. My students need as many opportunities with hands-on experiences as possible in order to give them concrete and tangible learning experiences. The magnetic letter sets, beginning sound sets, sight word builders, CVC word builder sets all are hands-on ways to allow the students to manipulate the letters and visually see the words that they are creating and reading. These activities also offer the students a variety of ways to help them maintain attention and interest in learning to read. (Nevada Standard: ELA 2. Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds.) I believe that these various activities will encourage active learning through hands-on activities which will facilitate learning in fun, engaging and educational ways to establish a love for learning and build lifelong learners.
