We have been using the new soccer equipment during our after-school program to practice skills such as dribbling, passing, shooting, ball control, and working together as a team.\r\n\r\nThe students were incredibly excited when they first saw the new equipment! They could not wait to get outside and start playing. One of the best parts has been watching students encourage one another as they practice. Students who were already familiar with soccer have been able to help their classmates, while students who are newer to the sport have gained confidence each time they participate.\r\n\r\nThis project has provided much more than an opportunity to play soccer. Students are learning communication, cooperation, perseverance, sportsmanship, and how to handle both successes and challenges in a positive way.\r\n\r\nOur next steps are to continue building individual soccer skills while introducing more team-based drills and small games. As students become more confident, we will continue working on teamwork, strategy, and good sportsmanship. The farm animal pillows will create a cozy space for reading and learning.\r\n\r\nWe are excited to receive these materials and begin using them in our classroom! They are helping us build important literacy skills while also giving students more opportunities to simply enjoy reading. We use the books to work on skills such as comprehension, identifying characters and settings, sequencing events, making predictions, learning new vocabulary, and making connections between a story and our own experiences.\r\n\r\nReading can look very different depending on the needs of each student. Sometimes we read together as a group and talk about the story, while other times students explore books independently or with support from an adult. Having a variety of engaging, age-appropriate books is especially important because it allows students with different reading abilities to participate and feel successful.\r\n\r\nOne of the best parts has been watching students choose books on their own. Some of our students who don't typically seek out reading materials have been excited to look through the new books, share their favorites with adults and classmates, and return to the same books again and again. Instead of waiting for emotions to escalate into challenging behaviors, students can take a short break, use sensory or calming strategies, and return to classroom activities when they are ready. We are seeing students become more aware of their emotions and begin to identify strategies that work best for them.\r\n\r\nBecause these peace corners are available in multiple classrooms, many students throughout our school are benefiting from them. They have helped create classroom environments where students know that their social-emotional needs are important and that it is okay to take a moment to regulate before returning to learning. They all came up with cute names for them, and are regularly seen asking to hold them when they start to feel overwhelmed or upset. \r\n\r\nOne of the most amazing parts about it, is the reaction students had when I told them that other people from all over wanted to see them be successful, so they donated their own money to get items that would help them.
