Many of my students find reading challenging, and traditional books do not always capture their attention. When they first saw the new books, however, their excitement was immediate! They recognized favorite characters like Dog Man, Cat Kid, Pigeon, Narwhal and Jelly, and The Bad Guys, and they were eager to look through the books and choose what they wanted to read.\r\nThese books have helped me show my students that reading can be fun. The colorful illustrations, graphic-novel formats, humor, and familiar characters make reading feel less intimidating and more inviting. Students who were once hesitant to pick up a book are now more willing to explore the classroom library, look through the pages, talk about the characters, and spend time reading.\r\nThe materials also give us opportunities to work on important literacy skills such as vocabulary, comprehension, sequencing, identifying characters, answering WH questions, and retelling stories. The puzzle and LEGO book provide additional hands-on ways for students to make connections, problem-solve, and engage with literacy in a different way.\r\nOne of the most meaningful parts of this project has been watching my students begin to see themselves as readers. Every time a student independently chooses a book, laughs at a story, shares a favorite page, or asks to read more, it is a success worth celebrating.\r\nThank you for helping my reluctant readers discover books they can connect with and enjoy. Your generosity is helping turn hesitation into excitement, building confidence one page at a time, and giving my students the opportunity to truly shine as readers!","fullyFundedDate":1789511873061,"projectUrl":"project/helping-reluctant-readers-shine/10370494/","projectTitle":"Helping Reluctant Readers Shine","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Lytle","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7797746"},{"teacherId":7797746,"projectId":10544874,"letterContent":"Our \"Small Tools, Big Possibilities\" project has brought so much excitement, comfort, and meaningful learning into our classroom. When my students first saw the new supplies, they could not wait to explore them! Their smiles and excitement reminded me that sometimes the smallest tools can open the door to the biggest possibilities.\r\nThe sensory materials have been especially helpful for my students with autism. The fidgets, sensory tubes, spinning chair, textured tiles, putty, and marble maze mats provide students with different ways to regulate their bodies and emotions. Students are beginning to recognize when they need a sensory break and are learning to choose a tool that helps them calm, refocus, and return to learning. This is helping us build self-regulation and independence, skills that are important both inside and outside the classroom.\r\nThe materials are also helping us make academics more engaging. We are using the giant alphabet beads for letter recognition, spelling, and fine-motor practice. The animal figures are wonderful for sorting, counting, vocabulary, imaginative play, and communication activities. Our puzzles and shape sorter provide additional opportunities to practice problem-solving, matching, and persistence.\r\nI have also loved watching my students use the materials to develop their social-emotional and communication skills. The Big Feelings set gives us another way to talk about emotions, while many of the sensory and play materials naturally encourage requesting, sharing, turn-taking, and interacting with classmates.\r\nThese supplies have allowed me to provide more individualized learning experiences because every student has different strengths and needs. A tool that may help one student focus can help another student communicate, practice a new academic skill, or simply feel comfortable enough to participate.\r\nThank you to everyone who helped make \"Small Tools, Big Possibilities\" a reality. You have given my students much more than toys and classroom supplies. You have given them tools to communicate, regulate, explore, learn, and become more independent. When my students first saw all of the new materials, their faces immediately lit up. They were excited, curious, and eager to explore everything. It was wonderful to watch them discover that these special materials had been chosen just for their classroom and their individual learning needs.\r\nMy students are now using the supplies throughout the school day in many different ways. The sensory materials have become especially valuable when students need a break, feel overwhelmed, or need help regulating their bodies before returning to instruction. The lights, vibrating sensory items, and other calming tools give students appropriate choices and are helping them learn what strategies work best for them. The visual timer is helping with transitions, work completion, and understanding how long they have for an activity or break.\r\nWe are also enjoying the academic materials. The magnetic ten-frames provide a hands-on way to practice counting, number sense, addition, and subtraction. The books about soccer stars have been a wonderful way to encourage reading by connecting literacy to something that interests my students. Seeing students become excited about picking up a book is exactly what I hoped this project would accomplish.\r\nOne of the greatest impacts has been seeing my students become more independent and confident. These supplies allow me to provide instruction and support in ways that meet their unique needs. Instead of every student being expected to learn or regulate in the same way, they now have different tools available to help them be successful.\r\nThank you to everyone who supported \"Read, Regulate, and Rise!\" Your generosity has created moments of excitement, comfort, learning, and accomplishment in our classroom. My students' reactions when they first saw the supplies—and the smiles I continue to see as they use them—are a wonderful reminder of how much your support means to us. Some have sounds associated with words or actions in the story, and some have different textures for the students to feel. Some of the books are about characters that they know and love and because they are familiar with them, they love to listen and look at books with those characters. All of these books help make reading fun for the students in my class and allow them to engage in reading and looking at books. \r\n\r\nStorytime in my classroom is loud. We sing songs that are made into books and that helps these students engage in listening, as well as read, or sing, the words later.
