One of my favorite moments was handing out custom-cut stencils for a printmaking lesson; the children were so excited to use professional-grade tools that were made right here in our classroom without any of the harsh smells or smoke we used to worry about.\r\nWith the air staying fresh and clean, I am now moving forward with creating a series of tactile texture boards for our upcoming unit on sensory art. These boards will allow my students to explore different patterns and relief surfaces through touch before they begin their own clay rubbings. While many of our generous donors use technology like smartphones or laptops daily, the technology behind a laser engraver—often referred to as CNC (Computer Numerical Control)—is a cornerstone of modern manufacturing that students rarely get to see in person. By bringing this tool into our room, you haven't just given us a machine; you've given us a portal into the world of engineering, design, and tangible creation. In a modern classroom, technology isn't just about screens; it's about the process of making. While I am still personally mastering the nuances of the software and the machine's specific settings, the initial impact on my students has been profound. It turns abstract concepts into something they can hold in their hands.\r\nThe most exciting moment for my students so far was seeing the machine in action for the first time. To celebrate Reading Week, I used the engraver to create custom wood bookmarks for every single student. While I handled the initial designs as I worked through the learning curve of the software, the impact on the students was immediate. In a world of mass-produced plastic, receiving a custom-etched wooden bookmark felt like receiving a piece of art. The students were fascinated by the precision of the laser. It turned a standard lesson on literacy into a discussion about technology. They didn't just see a bookmark; they saw a physical manifestation of what happens when digital design meets physical material. This small gift gave them a sense of ownership over their reading time and served as the perfect introduction to what this machine can do.\r\nThis technology has been particularly impactful for my students who are tactile or kinesthetic learners. We have several students who struggle to stay engaged with traditional lectures or digital screens, but their eyes lit up the moment they saw the engraver's beam move across the wood. One student, who often feels frustrated by handwriting or drawing, was amazed to see how a computer could execute a perfect, intricate line. It has opened up a new avenue for them to feel successful in a school environment. They aren't just consumers of information anymore; they are seeing the potential to be makers and builders. They are learning the fundamentals of precision, spatial awareness, and the trial-and-error process that defines scientific thinking.\r\nAs I continue to learn, the impact of this project will only grow. I am currently in the process of designing and prototyping custom weaving looms for the class. These looms will allow us to integrate art, history, and fine motor skills into our curriculum in a way that wouldn't be possible without this equipment. Eventually, the goal is for the students to move from being observers to being designers themselves. They will learn to troubleshoot, to measure with extreme precision, and to understand that failing a design is just part of the iterative process of engineering. Your support has laid the foundation for a classroom where students don't just read about the future—they build it.","fullyFundedDate":1768055957782,"projectUrl":"project/bringing-digital-fabrication-to-elementa/9989315/","projectTitle":"Bringing Digital Fabrication to Elementary Art","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Roadifer","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3156633_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1744202741994","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/ms-roadifer"},{"teacherId":8722452,"projectId":10011962,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for supporting our classroom! Because of your generosity, my students are now using the new movement equipment, fidgets, and small prizes every day to support their learning and engagement.\r\n\r\nIn our Pre-K classroom, many students benefit from opportunities to move and use sensory tools to help them focus and regulate their bodies. One special moment was when a student tried the movement bike for the first time. With a teacher nearby for support, the student practiced pedaling and balancing while smiling and laughing. Other students watched excitedly and patiently waited for their turn, cheering each other on. It quickly became a fun way for students to build gross motor skills, coordination, and confidence.\r\n\r\nThe fidgets have also made a big difference in helping students stay engaged during circle time and small group activities. Some students use them to help keep their hands busy while listening to a story or lesson. This helps them stay focused and participate more successfully in classroom discussions and activities.\r\n\r\nThe small prizes have been wonderful for celebrating positive choices, effort, and kindness. Students feel proud when they earn a small reward for following classroom expectations, trying their best, or helping a friend.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the new materials, they were full of excitement and curiosity. Their faces lit up, and they were eager to explore everything right away. It has already created many joyful learning moments in our classroom.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, we will continue using these materials during movement breaks, small group rotations, and behavior support systems.
