We spend 8 weeks during this unit, reading each book and doing an activity with each one. We have group discussions on the things we liked or didn't like about the books. In essence, these students become critics. Once we are done with all 8 books, the students each get a vote for which book they liked the best. These votes are turned in to the NYRA committed, tabulated, and the winner is announced. From the moment they saw them, I noticed a big increase in curiosity and excitement. They were eager to explore, ask questions, and figure out how everything worked. It made math feel more fun and less intimidating for them. Instead of seeing math as something they have to do, they're starting to see it as something they actually enjoy. That shift has been really nice to see.\r\n\r\nOne of our favorite moments was during a small group activity where students worked together to solve problems using the hands-on tools. As they rotated through the centers, I saw them naturally start to collaborate, share ideas, and build off each other's thinking. Students who don't usually speak up were raising their hands, talking with their groups, and even stepping into leadership roles. Some of my quieter students were more willing to explain their thinking and help their classmates. It created a more comfortable and supportive environment where students felt okay trying, making mistakes, and learning from each other.\r\n\r\nThe hands-on materials have also helped deepen their understanding of key math concepts. Instead of just solving problems on paper, students are able to show their thinking using the tools, which has made a big difference. I've noticed they are making stronger connections and understanding the \"why\" behind their answers. They are also starting to explain their thinking more clearly, both with their partners and during whole group discussions. It has been great to see their confidence grow as they work through each problem.","fullyFundedDate":1768765926262,"projectUrl":"project/hands-on-math-and-learning/10038483/","projectTitle":"Hands-On Math and Learning","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Ido","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8370940_orig.jpg?crop=2581,2582,x0,y189&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1655476992395","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8370940"},{"teacherId":7573132,"projectId":10015172,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous donations. The new texts introduced through this project support students in developing comprehension strategies such as identifying the main idea, making inferences, and analyzing characters' actions and motivations. Students are also learning to ask thoughtful questions, make connections to their own lives, and expand their vocabulary through rich and engaging language. These skills help them grow not only as readers, but as critical thinkers.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is an active, student-centered experience. You might see students gathered in small groups discussing a chapter, partners taking turns reading aloud, or individuals curled up in a cozy corner fully immersed in a book of their choice. We practice both guided reading—where I support students at their instructional level—and independent reading, where students explore texts that spark their interests. There is a strong emphasis on discussion, reflection, and sharing, which helps students build confidence and a sense of community around reading.\r\n\r\nSeveral students have been especially excited about the new books. For example, one student who previously struggled to stay engaged during reading time now eagerly picks up books and even asks to take them home. Another student, who was already a strong reader, has been diving deeper into texts by asking insightful questions and making connections across different stories. It has been incredibly rewarding to see students discover books that resonate with them and to watch their enthusiasm and confidence grow.\r\n\r\nYour support has truly made a difference in creating a classroom where every student can see themselves as a reader. What excites them most is the ability to finally be heard and understood—seeing them press a button to share a thought, request, or feeling is incredibly powerful, and it has made learning more interactive, empowering, and joyful rather than frustrating. I've seen remarkable growth in students who previously struggled to communicate; for example, one student who rarely initiated interaction now uses the iPad to greet teachers and classmates, while another independently requests items and participates more actively in lessons. Though these may seem like small steps, they are truly life-changing milestones, as these iPads are not just tools—they are opening doors to confidence, independence, meaningful connections, and a stronger sense of belonging.\r\n\r\nWe are incredibly grateful for your generosity and support in making this possible.
