During Black History Month this year, my students showed me just how much they needed more resources that reflect their own lives. I am requesting stories with characters that reflect themselves and their personal journey. I would find my students all hovering around the Black History Month bulletin board. They were all asking me questions about each person that the board showcased. I would continue to get questions about each of these people throughout each day. When we would learn about these figures in class my students would beg for more. My students would ask me to help them find books in our classroom library about these people and the civil rights movement. I didn't have enough of them for what my students were asking for. This is when I realized the need for more books with characters my students can identify with. Not only for Black History month but for all my students to see successful people that look like, or have experiences like themselves. Books that are on their reading level, that they can read on their own.
