What a wonderful instrument to now have in our music classroom. These are stored well on racks and are a huge draw for all ages. Very importantly I have enough instruments to provide one for each student to learn on. Students in all grades were wide eyed and SO excited when they first saw the ukuleles, and have not stopped asking to use them! The expression of wonder on their faces was priceless. \r\n\r\nOne moment that sticks in my mind is a quiet 5th grade student, who had the opportunity to pick up a ukulele during a few minutes of instrument exploration time. He has been incredibly quick to learn how to strum and play chords. Every chance he gets he chooses the ukulele, and sits down to practice, improvise, and play. \r\n\r\nAt Tatnuck Magnet School, teachers have the chance to offer \"lunchtime club activities\", and I created a Wednesday Ukulele lunchtime club. The 5th grade student, Patrick, was immediate in joining, and he is already teaching others proper fingering. Several students joined to start, and others are asking to join, as we have a lot of fun coming together to sing and play! \r\nI will also be teaching a unit on ukulele to 5th and 6th grade students, where all students will learn how to finger pick, and learn chords for playing songs. \r\nStudents that are ready will perform on ukuleles in our upcoming Holiday concert. This is an exciting goal for them, especially as they realize they can practice and reach this goal. \r\nI have been teaching our littlest students (Kindergarten!) how to properly hold and strum on the ukulele as well. It is amazing to see how seriously they approach this, and how careful they are with the opportunity to play this instrument. In every music class, Kindergarteners would ask about playing the ukulele. Learning their basics now will carry over into older years. I have to practice myself to keep up with all of our future young musicians! \r\nWhat a beautiful instrument to have for so many students.
