Seventh graders who will tell you they \"don't read\" were reaching over each other to see the covers.\r\n\r\nA lot of people love books without ever having to teach one, so let me tell you what we actually do with these. Because these are works of literary nonfiction, my scholars are learning to track a writer's claim across an entire book and to separate what the author is arguing from what the author is reporting — a skill the state test asks for and that almost no one can do on the first try. With Brown Girl Dreaming, we're studying how a memoirist decides which moments to put on the page and which to leave off, and what that choice does to a reader. With [TITLE], we annotate for evidence: underline the fact, star the interpretation, write your unanswered question in the margin. They get to write in these books. That changes everything about how a thirteen-year-old reads.\r\n\r\nReading in my room is not quiet rows. We read aloud, we stop, we argue. Scholars run the discussion themselves during our Project Learning block; one tracks who hasn't spoken, another holds us to naming a page before we accept a claim. Most days my job is to take notes on what they're noticing, which is usually sharper than what I'd planned to teach.\r\n\r\nOne of my scholars finished Brown Girl Dreaming in three days. He came to me before class, still holding it, and asked if there was another one like it. I have been teaching long enough to know that question is the whole job.\r\n\r\nNone of that happens with a class set that goes back in the bin at 3:00. For the past few years, I have attempted to acquire a subscription to Time for Kids without success. The subscription donation has added another layer of support to my classroom that I desperately needed. Reading comprehension is an integral part of learning and is especially needed within a Social Studies class. The Time for Kids subscription offers short high interest articles. The students are not only improving comprehension skills they are learning more about the world they live in. I am able to use this resource to provide articles that support what we are already learning in class as well as interest them to new people and ideas. This teaching tool assistance this school year has been immeasurable. The subscription was especially essential during the week school was closed this year because of a snowstorm. I was able to interact with the students by assigning articles for them to read via Google Classroom. We were able to discuss them; they completed brief written responses and interacted with one another about the current events; in particular the Olympics. My students did not lose out on learning thanks to the subscription.\r\n\r\nOnce again thank you so much for the donation.
