They earn a reading raffle ticket when they finish a fiction or a non-fiction book and complete an assignment to show understanding. New this year in my classroom, I also started doing a raffle for progress on iready reading lessons where the students are working at their own level and I vary the criteria to earn a raffle each week. \r\n\r\nWhile intrinsic motivation is best, some students just need that little extra motivation and your raffle prizes are doing just that.These little fidgets, squishie toys, and pullback race cars are making a world of difference in my seventh grade in English Language Arts class. I started off by introducing the books to them by showing them the cover and explaining the gist of the book and by reading the summary on the back. We also put a page together online with book trailers that people have made to introduce the book and we also show them videos of these authors or other popular authors talking about these new books. \r\n\r\nThe books are continually being checked out by my students and they are loving them. The other students are now hearing about them from their peers so that helps elevate the book more. \r\n\r\nOnce the voting starts in March, the students will have an easier time voting for each book in the brackets because they have read quite a few of the titles. They have been reading them non-stop and have managed to complete most of them. \r\nThe Caudill books this year are particularly good because they really focus on many different topics. One of the most engaging is the book Victory! Stand! which is about the Olympic runner who stood up against segregation in the fight for Civil Right in the 1960s. Many of my students are able to connect with this book and it has become a favorite. \r\nBeing able to offer current and relevant books to students has always been a high priority of mine since I started teaching.
