They used the day before to count orders, create guest checking adding up each teacher's total, and organized the carts. The Rise and Sign Cafe is open every other week and the students and staff are eager for the next cafe! \r\nMy Deaf students were so excited to use all of the materials purchased from Charles Schwab. This breakfast cart is providing them with life skills that are essential job training skills and math literacy skills. The opportunity to communicate with people who don't know sign language is one they are often confronted with but don't know how to navigate. Thank you Charles Schwab for the opportunity! My students have been so excited to explore the garden and use the new materials. At this age, children are naturally curious and love to look closely at everything around them. The butterfly garden gives them a wonderful place to learn through real, hands-on experiences. They can observe butterflies and other insects, look at the different plants and flowers, water the plants, and notice the changes taking place in the garden. They are learning that living things need water, sunlight, food, and care in order to grow. They are also learning to be gentle with insects and plants and to respect the living things around them. It has been wonderful to see their excitement when they discover something new and want to share it with their teachers and friends.\r\n\r\nHands-on learning is especially important for my Deaf and Hard of Hearing students. When they can see, touch, and experience something for themselves, it helps new words, signs, and ideas become more meaningful to them. The garden gives us so many natural opportunities to build language and communication skills. We can introduce and practice words and signs such as butterfly, caterpillar, flower, leaf, stem, insect, grow, change, water, and fly. We can also work on describing colors, sizes, shapes, and movements. The students practice asking and answering questions, taking turns, following directions, and sharing what they notice with others. They are also able to learn alongside their hearing peers, which gives all of the children opportunities to communicate, work together, and learn from one another. We read stories about butterflies, insects, plants, and the life cycle of a butterfly and then connect those stories to the things we see in the garden. These connections help the children better understand what we are reading and make the lessons more exciting and memorable.\r\n\r\nWe will continue visiting the butterfly garden and watching how it changes throughout the seasons. The students will make simple predictions about what they think might happen, look for new insects and plants, and talk about the changes they notice. We will document their learning through drawings, photographs, classroom conversations, and projects connected to our garden experiences. The children will be able to look back at their work and see how much they have learned. This project has given my students more than just science materials. It has given them a place to explore, communicate, build friendships, and feel successful as learners. These experiences support early science skills, language development, curiosity, and confidence. I am so grateful that my students have this wonderful opportunity to learn in a way that is meaningful and fun for them.
