My students love learning math by engaging in math activities with manipulatives. Our school, unfortunately, has limited resources. Through the use of manipulatives, my students are able to communicate their understanding of mathematical concepts by showing what they know. Using manipulatives such as base ten blocks, algebra tiles, compasses, protractors, and 3-D objects bridges the gap between the concrete and abstract conceptual understandings. Students will explore new and complex mathematical concepts using manipulatives in purposeful independent and small group activities from grades K-8 involving number sense, algebraic operations, geometric calculations, statistics, and data organization. Students will be able to experiment with math to discover patterns and problem-solving methods. Furthermore, exploring manipulatives will provide an avenue for students to discuss, debate, and rethink math solutions. Through the use of manipulatives, my students will be able to demonstrate their understanding of mathematical concepts by showing what they know.
