Your support has given my students more opportunities to read, explore new ideas, and most importantly, make meaningful connections between the stories they read and the place they call home: Hawaiʻi.\r\n\r\nThe new texts provide opportunities for students to develop important reading and English Language Arts skills such as comprehension, vocabulary, identifying themes, analyzing characters, making inferences, and supporting their ideas with evidence from the text.\r\nHowever, one of the most meaningful lessons these books provide is the opportunity for place-based learning. I encourage my students to look beyond the pages of a book and ask, \"How does this connect to Hawaiʻi? How does this connect to my community? \r\nStudents are able to compare the people, places, cultures, challenges, and experiences in the books to their own lives here on Maui. This allows reading to become more relevant and meaningful rather than simply an assignment.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is an opportunity to explore both literature and our own community. Students read independently, participate in discussions, complete reading responses, and make connections between the texts and their experiences growing up in Hawaiʻi.\r\nWe regularly ask students to consider questions such as:\r\nHow does this story connect to life in Hawaiʻi?\r\nAre there similar issues or experiences in our community?\r\nHow are the characters' values connected to values we see in our own families and communities?\r\nWhat can this story teach us about our own home?\r\nWhenever possible, I incorporate Hawaiʻi into our reading, writing, and discussions. My goal is for students to recognize that their home, culture, community, and experiences are valuable sources of knowledge.\r\n\r\nI have also seen students become excited when they can make connections between a book and something they have experienced here on Maui. Those conversations often lead to students sharing stories about their families, communities, traditions, and life in Hawaiʻi.\r\n\r\nFor my students, reading is not just about traveling to another world through a book. It is also about looking at their own world in a new way.\r\nYour donation helps make that possible. Your donation helped provide my students with new resources that made writing more engaging, interactive, and meaningful. The writing workshop was a success, and the large whiteboards allowed students to practice the specific parts of an informative essay in a hands-on way. After completing an outline, students worked in groups to focus on different sections of the essay, including the introduction paragraph, T1, T2, T3, and the conclusion paragraph. Each group wrote their assigned section on a different whiteboard, then rotated around the room to read what other groups had written and leave positive feedback. When students returned to their home board, they reviewed the comments and made final changes to improve their writing.\r\n\r\nThe students were very excited when they first saw the large whiteboards. They enjoyed moving around the classroom, using the pens, and working together in a new way. Many students were curious about the activity and quickly became engaged once they understood how they would be collaborating. This project gave them a chance to see writing as a process, not just an assignment. The next step was for students to take what they learned from the group activity and apply it to their own individual essays. Because of this workshop, students gained more confidence in organizing their ideas and writing a full informative essay independently.
