The snacks have become an important part of our classroom routine, especially for students who may not have had breakfast before school. One of the most meaningful moments has been seeing a student come into the classroom having a difficult morning, grab a snack, and then settle in with the class ready to learn. Something as simple as having a granola bar or crackers available can make such a difference for a five-year-old who is hungry. Once their bellies are full, they are able to focus, participate in our lessons, play with their friends, and enjoy being in kindergarten.\r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the new snacks, they were incredibly excited! They loved seeing all of the choices and knowing that there would be something available when they needed it. More importantly, the snack cart has helped create a classroom where students know that their needs are important and that they are cared for. Moving forward, we will continue using the snack cart throughout the school year while working on our kindergarten learning goals, including letters and sounds, counting, early math skills, reading, and building friendships. With 39 students who absolutely LOVE being outside, the soccer balls, footballs, jump ropes, chalk, and cones have given them new ways to stay active and play together. Many of my students do not have the opportunity to participate in organized sports outside of school, so recess has become a special opportunity for them to learn and practice these skills. One of my favorite moments was seeing students immediately gather around the new materials and begin creating their own games. They were taking turns, teaching one another how to play, and working together to make sure everyone could participate.\r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the materials, they were incredibly excited and eager to get outside and use them! I especially loved watching our ELL students join in because sports and play truly can break down language barriers. Even when students don't share the same language or have different experiences with sports, they can still communicate, cooperate, and have fun together. Moving forward, my students will continue using the materials during recess and will have opportunities to create and learn new games. Our students will be able to enjoy bubbles together as we celebrate all they have learned and accomplished this year. Families were genuinely excited to see some of their favorite items included, such as Slim Jims and black beans and rice, which made the experience feel personal and thoughtful rather than generic. Providing new jackets, hats, and gloves ensured that students were not only physically warm, but also comfortable enough to focus on learning instead of the cold. Attendance improved on chilly mornings, and students were able to fully engage in their school day without discomfort.\r\n\r\nBeyond meeting a basic need, this project brought joy and confidence to our students. The smiles on their faces as they tried on their jackets and hearing them proudly share how soft and warm they felt was incredibly rewarding. For many of our children, this was their very first winter coat, and for some, it was the first brand-new item they had ever received. Knowing they felt safe, warm, and cared for made a lasting difference, and it reinforced that their school community sees them, values them, and wants them to thrive. \r\n\r\nThank you for making this project possible and giving me the opportunity to help students in need at my school.
