Students first use the clear plastic sleeves to do a research-based routine called \"trace, copy, cover, avert\" and enjoy owning their materials and doing the routine independently. It also clearly works! I have 2 first graders who have already earned three heart words a piece -- this is fast progress for my students! When they earn the heart words, they place them in their new, color-coded flashcard bin. They are so proud to have their own bin fill up with words they have committed to memory. They can track their progress by looking in the bin to see how many cards they have earned. \r\n\r\nThe students love the ownership of heart words now; for years, I felt like I was leading them through every stroke of writing and memorizing high-frequency words. Just yesterday, one of the 2nd graders led everyone else! And each individual student is able to do about 90% of the routines on their own. \r\n\r\nOnce a student earns a new high-frequency words, did you know they can now read a decodable text they could not read the day before? High frequency words UNLOCK actual reading. They were eager to open individual materials and explain to each other what the materials were and how they thought those materials would be used. Learning how the ice maker worked was a top-tier activity. The class was eager to examine the ice cubes and compare them to ice they have at home. We discussed how water becomes ice and then what happens when ice is not kept cold or heat is introduced. They discussed how their hands have heat and have the power to melt ice. We used the paper towels to dry our hands and then observed how ice melts on paper towels. They also observed how the mercury in a thermometers shifts when it is submerged in cold water and hot water. \r\n\r\nThe class also conducted additional experiments that utilized water and other liquids. One group mixed different food colorings with water in the test tubes to demonstrate \"physical change\" and another group mixed baking soda with either water or vinegar to demonstrate \"chemical reactions\" using the eye droppers.
