They can explore playing more harmony with different sets of four matching mallets to choose from, something we have not had before. I created a self-care cart where students can independently access these basic necessities without having to ask for permission or explain their personal circumstances. Many of my students come from low-income families, and having access to these everyday essentials gives them one less thing to worry about during the school day. Students have personally come up to me after class to tell me how much it means to them that the cart is available. At this age, students can become especially self-conscious about their appearance and hygiene, so being able to quietly access these items can make a student feel more comfortable, confident, and ready to learn.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the materials, they were excited and extremely appreciative. What touched me most was that students continued coming to me privately afterward to share how important the resources were to them. The cart allows students to get what they need while maintaining their privacy and dignity. Moving forward, we will continue using the cart throughout the school year while my Freshman Seminar students work on becoming more independent, advocating for themselves, asking for help, and learning how to use the resources available to them at school. This project has shown my students that their basic needs matter and that they have a classroom community that cares about them as both students and people. Some students began talking about what they felt they needed from their teachers in order to be successful at school. This turned into a thoughtful group discussion about how everyone comes from different lifestyles and circumstances. The students recognized that, unfortunately, some of their peers may not always have simple necessities such as a pencil, highlighter, or clipboard.\r\n\r\nBecause of the generosity of our donors, my students no longer have to worry about whether they have something to write with or the supplies they need to participate. Having these resources available has created a more comfortable and less stressful learning environment for them.\r\nMy students were extremely excited when they first saw the materials! They immediately noticed the variety of supplies and were especially excited about the sensory items. They appreciated having classroom materials readily available and knowing that they could use what they needed without feeling embarrassed or stressed about not having their own supplies.\r\n\r\nIt was wonderful to see their excitement, but even more meaningful was seeing how the supplies gave them a sense of comfort and belonging. They knew that they were prepared to participate in class just like everyone else. \r\nOur next steps are to continue using these resources to support daily learning, organization, participation, and student well-being. Students will continue using the clipboards and writing supplies during assignments, group activities, and discussions.
