My Art Photography classes study how photography relates to art and their own lives, as well as the technical aspects of the darkroom. We also bring in digital photography, using cameras and smartphones, including using photography as a starting point for mixed-media projects. My students really enjoy black and white film and photographic processing and printing. They love the darkroom and the feeling of accomplishment they get from a beautiful photo they made all by themselves from film to print. There are very few classes like mine in our district, and I feel lucky to be able to teach them this dying art. But film, chemicals, and paper are expensive and each year our budget is cut more and more. Most of our students are from low-income homes, and can not afford lab fees or supplies on their own.
