These shirts were used as their base costume for the production and the thing the students were most excited about creating! \r\n\r\nWe took a deep dive into the design process for these shirts. Since all the shirts were meant to reflect different reef creatures, we started by looking at photos of coral reefs and talking about the colors we saw. Then, we looked at individual fish/octopi/stingrays, and students picked the creature they wanted to base their costume on. They picked a shirt color and then moved on to their design renderings.\r\n\r\nAs we started to actually paint and glue decorations to these shirts, students referenced their renderings. For some students, creativity and open-ended projects can be very overwhelming because they either have an incredible desire to get it \"right\" or feel lost because they don't know where to start. A rendering provides a concrete place to jump off from, and I saw students engaging with this design project in ways they never had in drama class. As the students worked, they were editing their renderings and asking their classmates for feedback/other ideas. The collaboration that naturally happened from this project was incredible!\r\n\r\nThanks to your support, we were able to provide a shirt for each elementary student involved in this production. Not only did they do a great job of depicting the reef creature they had picked, but they also made costumes that were unique to them and their ideas. There were students who wore their reef shirts all week at school, not just at the performances, because they were so incredibly proud of their work! This year, I wanted students to have the opportunity to learn about both acting and design, and show them that there is more than one way to get involved with theatre and the arts!\r\n\r\nThe students were SO excited watching all the boxes and supplies come in. Each class had an unboxing day where they were able to open the boxes and explore the materials, and these classes were full of students sharing ideas for how we could use the supplies and collaborating with each other to come up with completely new ideas!\r\n\r\nWe started all of our design projects by creating costume and scenic renderings - a drawn plan of what you're hoping to build/create. Students referenced their renderings as they built scenic and costume pieces. This provided a very tangible lesson on problem-solving. There were materials that didn't behave the way students expected, or sometimes a design would turn out differently than imagined. Students were editing their renderings as they worked, coming up with new ideas, and becoming more and more excited as they started to see the completed projects that fully reflected their creativity and their ideas.\r\n\r\nAll of these elements came together for our production, which was a stunning display of each student's creativity and imagination. I provided a rough guideline for each project, but intentionally left them open-ended so students could make each piece their own. What we ended up with was a beautiful mosaic where each student was given space to shine, while contributing to something greater than themselves. There were 5th graders helping kindergarteners, 3rd graders leading groups of 1st graders - they were all making sure that nobody got left behind. In our post-show reflection, the team-building and teamwork skills were the most common answers for \"What is one thing you learned through this production?\"\r\n\r\nThanks to your generous support, students were able to close this production with a sense of accomplishment and pride, not just from their acting work on stage, but from all of their design and creation work as well. Ever since the end of February, I've been asked too many times to count what the musical will be next year, what parts they'll have, and if they'll get to make costumes/sets again. This is so exciting for me as a teacher! I had a parent tell me that learning about theatrical design had opened up a whole new world for their student and presented options they had never considered before. This student was not alone in that experience - I have seen multiple students light up in ways they have not before in drama class through their design work. These experiences would not have been possible without your generous support and these supplies.\r\n\r\nMy goal is for the theatre classroom to be a safe space for students where they feel their creativity drives the bus, where their ideas are valued, considered, and implemented, and where students can see themselves reflected in the work they do. I've watched students' self-confidence jump to new levels as a direct result of encouraging their creativity. Thank you so much for making this opportunity possible for my students and for being another voice cheering them on as they continue to pursue their creativity! As a K-12 teacher, it can sometimes be difficult to find processes that work for Kindergarten as well as High School. When time is tight between classes, it is imperative that supplies and organization are easy and accessible to all students.\r\n\r\nThe supply boxes tick so many of the easy and accessible organization boxes. They stack neatly and close securely while still being easy for little hands to open. They're big enough to hold a full set of supplies (markers, crayons, and scissors), which also means there is enough of each color to go around. Gone are the days when the last red marker was taken! \r\n\r\nThese supplies were used on many middle and high school student projects last semester, and have helped design our elementary musical this semester. Removing the organizational barrier has brought creativity that much closer to the students' fingertips, and I've watched both their creativity and ability to back up decisions with clear concept statements grow exponentially. \r\n\r\nThese supplies are the creative foundation for the drama classroom. In the toddler room, rugs are not just decorative items; they are essential tools that enhance learning and interaction among children. \r\n\r\nOne of the primary functions of our rugs is to provide a designated space for circle time, which is a fundamental aspect of our daily routine. During circle time, teachers and children gather to engage in group activities, share stories, and discuss various topics. The rug creates a cozy, inviting area where children feel comfortable and are more inclined to participate. It serves as a central gathering place that fosters a sense of community and belonging, which is crucial at this developmental stage.\r\n\r\nOn the rug, we also introduce essential concepts such as shapes, numbers, and colors through interactive games and activities. For instance, using shapes on the rug, children can physically move to different areas based on the shapes called out, reinforcing their understanding through movement and play. This hands-on approach makes learning fun and memorable, allowing children to absorb knowledge in a way that is both enjoyable and effective. Games that incorporate numbers and colors, such as hopscotch or counting games, become more engaging and tangible when played on a colorful, defined space. \r\n\r\nBeyond its educational uses, the rug provides soft seating, which is especially beneficial during story time or independent reading. This softness encourages children to settle in comfortably with their favorite books and promotes a love for reading from an early age. A cozy space dedicated to books allows children to explore literature freely, instilling curiosity and a passion for stories that can last a lifetime.\r\n\r\nFurthermore, the defined space the rug offers is crucial for fostering gross motor skills. Children need ample opportunities to stretch, move, and play, and a designated area helps them understand boundaries while encouraging physical activities. Whether it's rolling around, practicing balance, or participating in group games, the rug supports movement and coordination development. This is important because gross motor skills are foundational for overall physical development, impacting children's ability to engage in a wide range of activities as they grow.\r\n\r\nIn addition to its functional benefits, the rug brings a burst of color and joy to the classroom. Bright colors and fun designs stimulate children's visual senses and create an inviting atmosphere that enhances their mood. A vibrant environment has been shown to impact children's engagement and eagerness to learn. When children enter a room filled with joyful hues, they are more likely to feel excited about activities, fostering a positive attitude towards learning. \r\n\r\nIn conclusion, rugs in our toddler room are invaluable assets that enhance educational experiences, promote comfort, and support physical and emotional development. They foster a welcoming learning environment where children can explore essential concepts, enjoy stories, and develop crucial motor skills while surrounded by colors that inspire joy and creativity. Providing these rugs not only enriches our daily activities but also lays down a foundation for a lifetime of learning and exploration. By investing in quality rugs, we are investing in the holistic development of our children, ensuring they thrive both academically and socially.","fullyFundedDate":1755714782124,"projectUrl":"project/fun-new-classroom-rug/9575083/","projectTitle":"Fun New Classroom Rug","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Keilman","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-1_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7467321"},{"teacherId":7136942,"projectId":9607270,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for funding our Brain Break resting mats and other resources to stay organized.
