Students are using the binders and notebooks to organize A–G requirements, map out four-year plans, and track their college and career exploration goals. The Post-it easel pads and dry-erase pockets have allowed us to work collaboratively, helping students engage in more hands-on activities and get out of their seats. These materials have transformed our meetings from simple discussions into interactive, student-driven planning sessions.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the snacks and learned about the attendance incentives and end-of-year raffle prizes, their excitement was immediate. But what stood out most was not just the excitement, it was the sense that someone believed in them. The snacks help create a welcoming environment where students feel comfortable sharing their goals and fears about college. Students are showing up more regularly, participating more confidently, and taking real ownership of their future plans.\r\n\r\nBecause of you, our next steps include completing individualized four-year academic plans and beginning early college application and scholarship research. Students are building not just knowledge about A–G requirements and career pathways, but also confidence in their ability to succeed beyond high school. Your support has helped us create a space where underrepresented students feel seen, valued, and motivated to pursue higher education. Thank you for investing in their futures and for showing them that their goals truly matter.","fullyFundedDate":1757179166660,"projectUrl":"project/showing-up-standing-out-rewarding-stud/9512692/","projectTitle":"Showing Up, Standing Out: Rewarding Student Commitment for Underrepresented Students","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Watkins","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9373519_orig.jpg?crop=2400,2400,x0,y144&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1724971580142","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9373519"},{"teacherId":9373519,"projectId":9857024,"letterContent":"Because of your generosity, our students are engaging in college-readiness lessons in a way that feels welcoming, motivating, and empowering. Many of our Hispanic students enter high school already at risk of becoming A-G ineligible, often without fully understanding how their daily academic choices impact their post-secondary opportunities. With the new incentives, we have been able to create interactive small- and large-group sessions that make learning about college pathways feel exciting rather than intimidating. The snacks and incentives have helped create a positive, community-centered environment where students feel comfortable participating, asking questions, and sharing their goals.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the materials, especially the incentive snacks, they were genuinely excited about attending. What may seem small has made a big difference in attendance and engagement. Students are more willing to attend SSR to participate in discussions about A-G requirements and to complete academic planning activities. One powerful moment was watching a group of students brag about getting good grades and challenge others to step up their game to participate in a future pizza party based on the next quarter's A-G-eligible grades. \r\n\r\nOur counselors are continuing structured group lessons focused on academic planning, self-advocacy, and exploring post-secondary options that align with their strengths and interests. As incentives gradually become less necessary, we are already seeing intrinsic motivation grow and a willingness to seek us out for help and guidance. With the new materials and cooking tools, students worked together to decide on making soy sauce–flavored fried rice. Cooking together created natural communication, and we saw different strengths shine quiet students stepped into leadership roles, while others thoughtfully supported their classmates. It truly strengthened our sense of community.\r\n\r\nNow, students are reflecting on their cooking experience and learning more about Japanese food culture and traditions. Your contributions provided essential supplies—nose tissues, sanitary wipes, and paper towels—that play a much more meaningful role than many people realize. These items may seem simple, but in a busy classroom filled with energetic students, they are vital tools that help us maintain a healthy, welcoming, and safe learning environment. With your help, I've been able to ensure that students have access to the resources they need to care for themselves and one another throughout the school day. Your generosity directly supports not just the physical well-being of my students but also the emotional security that comes from knowing they are learning in a place that is clean, supported, and thoughtfully cared for. Every box, roll, and packet has contributed to a smoother, more comfortable, and more mindful daily experience for every student who walks through our door.\r\n\r\nBeyond the immediate benefits of cleanliness and comfort, your support has had a ripple effect on the overall classroom community. When students see that people beyond their school walls are willing to invest in their well-being, it reinforces the idea that they matter and that others believe in the importance of their education. Your generosity helps us teach not only academics but also the value of responsibility, empathy, and shared care for our space and one another. By helping us maintain a clean and organized classroom, you've given students the opportunity to take pride in their learning environment and to focus more fully on their academic work without distractions or health concerns. Your kindness has strengthened our classroom culture in ways that go far beyond stocked shelves—it has created a sense of connection, support, and encouragement that will last far longer than any single supply item.
