{"monthlySchoolDonationEnabled":true,"callToActionDisplayName":"George Washington High School","outOfStateSupporters":20.3,"allowSchoolLevelGiving":true,"hasFundedProjects":true,"projectGratitudeData":[{"teacherId":7961634,"projectId":10379266,"letterContent":"When I first introduced King Lear, some of my students were convinced that Shakespeare was, as they put it, \"mid.\" To be fair, it's difficult to appreciate Shakespeare when you're trying to decipher 400-year-old English while staring at a computer screen.\r\n\r\nThanks to your generosity, my students now have actual books in their hands. We can put the laptops away, turn to the same page, and read together without the distractions that inevitably come with having a screen in front of you.\r\n\r\nWhat makes No Fear Shakespeare particularly useful is the side-by-side modern translation. Students can figure out what Shakespeare is saying without losing the original language. And once they understand what's happening, we can get to the good stuff: why the characters behave the way they do, what motivates their decisions, and what Shakespeare might be suggesting about power, loyalty, pride, and human nature.\r\n\r\nMy students don't always agree with my interpretations, nor should they. I want them to challenge ideas, defend their arguments, and recognize that literature rarely offers simple answers. King Lear is particularly good for this because almost every character gives us something to argue about.\r\n\r\nMy students loved the play. More importantly, the analytical essays they wrote afterward were phenomenal. They weren't simply retelling the story. They were making arguments about the characters, examining contradictions, and exploring the complexities of the tragedy. That's exactly the kind of thinking I want to see from my AP Literature students.\r\n\r\nI don't need every student to leave my classroom believing Shakespeare is the greatest writer who ever lived. But he is a great writer. I do expect them to read him, think critically about his work, and have a defensible reason for whatever conclusion they reach.\r\n\r\nAnd judging by their enthusiasm and the quality of their essays, I'd say Shakespeare beat the allegations.\r\n\r\nPerhaps he's not so \"mid\" after all.\r\n\r\nThank you for funding these books.
