We noticed that, especially during distance learning, newcomers who don't speak English well, are isolating themselves. They watch native language movies and videos, they talk only to their family members or friends who speak the same home language, and due to shelter-in-place orders, are not able to seek out opportunities to speak to fluent English speakers. Our school is piloting an ESL Club for Vietnamese students by partnering with college students, who will serve as Mentors, in UC Berkeley's Vietnamese Student Association. During the weekly virtual Club meetings, the Cal Mentors can draw out the ESL Club students by engaging them in art projects such as drawing and journaling.
