I teach a bustling classroom of 30+ 6th graders each period who are eager to explore the natural world. I am fortunate to have a wonderfully diverse group of students from various socio-economic backgrounds to various ethnicities. Each of them brings a part of our world to the class discussion to help enrich the process of learning. The classroom itself is full of plants, animals, and specimen that students can interact with such as lizards, snakes, frogs, tortoises, fish, worms, and insects, and specimen such as skulls, antlers, bones, shells, teeth, snake shed and skin, and insect carapaces. All of these organisms (alive and dead) and parts of organisms are used to help students explore and engage with science and find their passion for the natural world. The drive now is to connect the natural world with technology inside the classroom to give my students a truly powerful and empowering educational experience.
