Having a class set allows every student to hold their own copy, follow along as we read together, and go back to reread important parts of the story.\r\n\r\nAs we read, we are practicing important second-grade skills including identifying the main idea and key details, making connections, building vocabulary, asking and answering questions, and using evidence from the text to support our thinking. Malala's story also gives us a meaningful opportunity to discuss courage, education, fairness, and standing up for what we believe is right in an age-appropriate way.\r\n\r\nMy students especially enjoy learning about real people who made a difference in the world. They are naturally curious and love sharing their thoughts and connections during our discussions. Our next step is to use Malala's story as inspiration for our own writing, as students think about a cause they care about and how they can use their own voice to make a difference. The aprons, Thanksgiving books, and festive decorations have helped us turn our classroom into a fun and engaging place to learn about gratitude, traditions, and the Thanksgiving season.\r\n\r\nOur aprons will be especially meaningful when we host our Thanksgiving Feast. Students will get to wear their aprons while helping prepare and enjoy a special classroom meal together. The Thanksgiving books have also given us opportunities to read, learn, and discuss the meaning of gratitude, while the decorations have made our classroom feel extra special and festive.\r\n\r\nOur next step is getting ready for our Thanksgiving Feast! We will be reading Thanksgiving stories, learning about different traditions, writing about what we are thankful for, and preparing to celebrate together. I am always looking for ways to have a more organized classroom, and the book containers are being put to good use in our classroom library.
