The students had a lot of fun working together using the materials to make the slime. It definitely taught them teamwork. They were having some trouble in the beginning with the ratio of ingredients. They made small practice batches to make sure they had it correct before making larger batches of the slime. The students were laughing and giggling because the first one didn't come out well. They figured out too much borax was used. They got the next one right and found their groove from there. They created their own assembly line, in a way. There were ten students making the slime while another two were handling the ingredients and dosing them out to each other as they were needed, to keep batches from getting mixed together. It was cool to be able to step back and watch them organize themselves!\r\n\tThe students have had a lot of fun making the slime. This process has helped create leaders, build confidence, and build friendships. Art students are known to be introvert and very quiet. This activity helped bring out personalities as they were working together. \r\n\tThe students continue to show perseverance in working together toward the goal of raising funds to attend an arts trip. So far, they have not met their goal fundraising amount but are continuing to work at it. During Advisory on Tuesdays 15 students can sign up for our BYOGuitar event. Students who do not have a guitar can borrow one of the guitars provided by Donors Choose. Students typically play in smaller groups although they have decided to come together to practice a couple of songs as a bigger group. The guitars have allowed us to incorporate hands-on music-making into lessons focused on rhythm, collaboration, and creative expression.\r\n\r\nWhen the guitars arrived, students were visibly excited and immediately curious. Many of our students already play instruments and sing, and while bringing guitars into a library space was initially cacophonous students have since formed into groups to play the same song together. This has helped build community and collaboration and allowed students to take a break from social media and gaming apps and communicate in meaningful ways with their peers. \r\n\r\nNext, students will continue working toward playing complete songs together as a group. They will practice reading chord charts, maintaining rhythm, and listening to one another as an ensemble. These next steps will culminate in informal performances that build confidence and reinforce teamwork, helping students see themselves as musicians while developing perseverance and creative skills.","fullyFundedDate":1767202999831,"projectUrl":"project/strumming-our-stories-guitars-for-cultu/9722699/","projectTitle":"Strumming Our Stories: Guitars for Cultural Connection","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Valencia","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-7_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9468553"},{"teacherId":3450602,"projectId":9552550,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous donation of the book Solito to our class. From the very beginning, their excitement was out of this world! With all of the supplies donated, each student was able to independently build their own jarred ecosystem layer by layer and took pride in making it unique, with some even giving their jars creative names. After all students were able to create their jar, from laying down the soil, to filling the jar with water in the end, we placed the ecosystems near windows or under grow lights to ensure that all of their hard work would thrive. In the days and weeks after, students were amazed to observe the elodea producing tiny oxygen bubbles on their leaves. This made the process of photosynthesis come alive right before their eyes. We continued to revisit these ecosystems throughout our entire photosynthesis and cellular respiration unit, using them as a living model to deepen understanding. Some students were so inspired that they even expanded their ecosystems by adding small aquatic organisms (such as snails, slugs, and even microscopic shrimp!), sparking even more curiosity and discussion.\r\n\r\nTo deepen their understanding, I also created a few ecosystems that were kept out of sunlight. These jars became just as impactful, as students observed the elodea begin to deteriorate and grow mold over time. This powerful comparison helped them clearly see the importance of sunlight and all necessary inputs in the photosynthesis process. It led to meaningful conversations about how delicate and interconnected ecosystems are, and why every component matters.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, students will continue to observe, record, and analyze changes in their ecosystems, connecting their findings to larger concepts like energy transfer and matter cycling.
