More importantly, they are helping me create a classroom where students are encouraged to read widely, think critically, and form their own informed opinions.\r\n\r\nThank you for giving my students access to stories that challenge them, inspire them, and remind them that reading can open the door to conversations that matter. One of my favorite moments was during a lesson on giving directions in Spanish. Students practiced writing affirmative commands, like \"dobla,\" \"sigue,\" and \"cruza\" on their whiteboards as I described a route on a map. Instead of a few students participating, every student was actively engaged, showing their answers at the same time. This allowed me to immediately assess understanding, clear up misconceptions, and adjust my teaching in real time. The whiteboards have truly transformed participation from a few voices to every voice in the room. \r\n\r\nMy students were genuinely excited when they first saw the materials. The individual whiteboards felt new and engaging to them, and they immediately wanted to use them. There was a noticeable increase in enthusiasm, especially from students who are usually more hesitant to speak up.\r\n\r\nCurrently, students are building on their skills by applying what they've learned in more interactive and communicative tasks. For example, they are working on creating and following directions using maps, where they write and revise commands on their whiteboards before sharing with partners. Moving forward, they will use these skills in a larger project where they design their own community maps and guide classmates using Spanish commands. The whiteboards will continue to support brainstorming, drafting, and quick checks for understanding as they prepare for these more complex tasks.","fullyFundedDate":1769177941068,"projectUrl":"project/whiteboards-wellness-and-wonderful-wor/9907837/","projectTitle":"Whiteboards, Wellness, and Wonderful Work!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Schiffman","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9258479_orig.jpg?crop=595,595,x646,y281&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1722886211192","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9258479"},{"teacherId":1025129,"projectId":9684519,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous support in providing copies of The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo to our high school students. Through Xiomara's story, students are exploring themes of identity, voice, family, and self-expression. These topics deeply resonate with them at this stage in their lives. The book is opening up important conversations and giving students the opportunity to see reflections of their own experiences, as well as perspectives different from their own.\r\n\r\nBeyond engagement, this text is helping students build critical reading and writing skills. They are analyzing poetic structure, examining author's craft, and gaining confidence in expressing their own thoughts and ideas. We've begun using the button maker for a Valentine's Day fundraiser, and we will continue to make buttons for our book fair at the end of the month. One of our favorite early moments was watching my TAs design their own buttons to test it out. They created everything from favorite quotes to favorite band. It turned into an instant conversation starter, and students proudly wore their new buttons. \r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the button maker and supplies, they were ecstatic. Several students gathered around asking, \"Can we make one right now?\" and brainstorming ideas before we even had it fully set up. Some students who don't typically seek out library activities were suddenly eager to participate, and it was wonderful to see them lead the way. The button maker has quickly become a tool that brings students together, encourages self-expression, and gives them a fun way to feel connected to their school community.\r\n\r\nNext, students will be using the button maker as part of ongoing library projects, including creating buttons for book displays, literacy celebrations, and student groups.
