Students use these texts to practice understanding meaning, breaking down unfamiliar words, and explaining their thinking with clear evidence. The books give us consistent material to apply these skills in a way that connects across content areas.\r\n\r\nInstruction is targeted and interactive. Students work at their own pace while we break down vocabulary, analyze sentences, and practice organizing ideas in writing. We also use the texts to support comprehension strategies like summarizing, questioning, and making connections. Several students who previously struggled to engage with text are now more willing to try, and they are showing growth in both confidence and accuracy. \r\n\r\nYour support has made it possible to build these foundational skills in a more consistent and meaningful way. It is doing exactly what I hoped it would, and it makes our classroom feel fuller and more complete. \r\n\r\nWhat stands out most is how much the students respect it. I never put up a sign or rule, but the moment the carpet was placed in the room, the students immediately started reminding each other, \"No shoes!\" Even when administrators or guests come in, I never say anything, but there is always a student who whispers or blurts out, \"Take off your shoes.\" To me, that shows their respect and their desire to take care of something that may not belong to them individually, but is part of their shared space. This technology has completely changed how our students learn. In a normal classroom, it can be scary to worry about making a mistake. These tools act like a patient, private coach for every learner. While home tech is often for fun, this tech is a bridge to the world. It lets students practice pronunciation in private until they feel brave enough to speak out loud. Most importantly, it has changed the way my students continue to build their language every day; they are now more curious and eager to explore new words on their own.\r\n\r\nThe most exciting part for the students is the instant feedback. They light up when the screen glows green to show they nailed a difficult phrase! It feels like a \"language superpower\" to them. Instead of waiting days for a grade, they know right now that they are succeeding. This makes them want to work harder and dive deeper. They aren't just memorizing words anymore; they are using them to solve puzzles and unlock new levels of learning.\r\n\r\nThe impact on our quietest students has been miraculous. We have one student who was so afraid of making a mistake that she wouldn't speak for months. Since using this tech, she has finally found her voice. Because the device didn't judge her, she felt safe enough to keep trying. Last week, she stood up and spoke a full sentence in front of the whole class with a huge smile. You haven't just gifted us gadgets; you have given these students the courage to be heard.","fullyFundedDate":1771697377238,"projectUrl":"project/where-language-learning-builds-confidenc/10108497/","projectTitle":"Where Language Learning Builds Confidence","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. (Profe) Garcia","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8483522_orig.jpg?crop=514,514,x741,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1692053082667","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8483522"},{"teacherId":9696559,"projectId":9918385,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your donation and contribution to my classroom! The books purchased included a variety ranging from picture books to chapter books and novels, allowing my students to practice reading and visual comprehension skills and relate back to their cultures. Many of the books I chose were focused on Asian and Pacific Islander voices and backgrounds, providing my students a glimpse into their culture while in ELA class and creating a space where they felt comfortable sharing their own stories. \r\n\r\nSince I had a range of picture or chapter/novel books, many of my students have shown an increase in engagement and interaction with the different types of books available to them. Many enjoy the picture books for their simplicity, visuals, and ability to tell a story in such a limited space/word. Others enjoy the chapter/novel books for practice their reading stamina and obtain inspiration when writing their own narratives or free writes. As previously mentioned, many of the books I chose are focused on Asian and Pacfific Islander backgrounds and culture. With this, I noticed many of my Filipino student, in particular, enjoy those books that incorporate their native language and customs, finding solace and comfort in reading about them.\r\n\r\nAll in all, my students have enjoyed seeing, reading, and interacting with the books. For my ninth and tenth-grade students, the most significant barrier to feeling like \"real\" artists was the inability to hold their work in their hands. The addition of our new laser-jet printer has completely bridged that gap.\r\n\r\nWith this printer, students are no longer just looking at pixels; they are mastering the physical side of graphic design.\r\n\r\nProfessional Packaging: Students utilized the printer to bring complex dieline packaging projects to life. Seeing their \"Pau Hana\" brand designs go from a flat digital template to a 3D physical bag (complete with intricate floral and shell motifs) gave them a profound sense of accomplishment.\r\n\r\nCommunity Building: We also used the printer to create student trading cards. By designing, printing, and cutting these cards, students were able to celebrate their identities—from singer-songwriters to musicians—creating a physical \"yearbook\" of talent that circulates throughout our classroom.\r\n\r\nThe impact goes beyond just the technical. By showcasing this high-quality, full-color work around the room, the \"sense of excellence\" I hoped to foster has taken root. Students are visibly inspired by seeing their peers' work displayed professionally. They are more meticulous with their designs because they know the final product will be a high-quality physical piece they can take home or display with pride.\r\n\r\nYour support provided more than just toner and paper; you provided the \"final click\" in the creative process. While our original plan for a rolling easel hit a snag due to the \"joys\" of shipping to Hawaii, your support allowed us to pivot and provide a mountain of high-impact supplies that have completely transformed our classroom culture. During our unit on solving systems by graphing, the room was buzzing—literally! My students were up and cheering, engaging in intense group competitions where they could graph quickly without worrying about scale. When someone got an answer wrong, I hit the new \"Wrong Answer\" buzzer, which sparked fits of laughter and kept the mood light. Even our daily routine has leveled up; students now have to solve a multiplication flashcard \"entry ticket\" before they even walk through the door. They sanitize after sneezing or coughing and use tissues to prevent germs from spreading. Similarly, we've started wiping the desks weekly. Each of my six periods cleans their workspace once a week to practice both mindfulness and good health habits. \r\n\r\nIn addition, the materials for the supply caddies have been a huge success! Students love being able to bring everything back to their table instead of constantly getting up. I even have more students coming in during their free time to complete projects for other classes that involve coloring or artistic tools. They just finished creating one-pagers for the narrative element terms that they learned in the second quarter. These one-pagers came out amazing, and I have them displayed on the front wall in my classroom to celebrate their hard work.\r\n\r\nLikewise, I was able to redo my bulletin boards to include more color. They now house our school's general learner outcomes for students, the different homonyms students confuse, and a mental health wall to remind students to have a growth mindset.\r\n\r\nWithout your help, none of this would've been possible.
