My students will be using the Sony Vario-Tessar and Sony Alpha mirrorless cameras and accompanying zoom lens for dual purposes: to create visual documentation of their participation in the learning process and to create informational documents about Hawaiian cultural practices and its strong relationship to environmental stewardship. My students will select areas of focus such as taro propagation, traditional Hawaiian under ground oven, reforestation of native plants, water and air quality, and conservation and create brochures, photo journals, and informational documents to activate others to action.
This project will significantly help my students internalize what they learn and be able to create a compelling argument for others to feel ownership in environmental sustainability. The finished products will allow them to learn how to utilize a camera to achieve the desired impact as well as understand the photo editing process.
Our state motto "Ua Mau ke Ea o ka ʻĀina i ka Pono" which translates to "The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness" represents a strong purpose for this project. Ultimately, my goal is to instill ownership in communities and to give voice to young individuals who represent the future of our island state. They will understand that they can make a tangible difference in impacting the quality of life for others.
