While chairs may seem like a simple classroom resource, they have made a tremendous difference in my students' ability to learn, participate, and feel comfortable in our classroom. My students spend 90-minute blocks learning through hands-on laboratory activities, collaborating with their classmates, analyzing data, and discussing real-world applications of science. Having comfortable, sturdy chairs has made those long learning periods much more enjoyable and allows students to focus their energy on learning rather than being distracted by uncomfortable seating.\r\n\r\nMy students were genuinely excited when they saw the new chairs arrive! They immediately noticed the difference and appreciated having seating that was comfortable, clean, and designed to support them during our extended lab periods. I have noticed that students are more settled, attentive, and engaged during instruction and laboratory activities. Something as basic as having a comfortable place to sit has communicated an important message to my students: they matter, and their learning environment matters. This activity came on the tail end of several lessons and lab activities where students learned about vital signs and how to measure them. This activity was refreshing in that it it gave students a chance to showcase their gained knowledge in a fun, stress-free setting. I was able to see them discuss concepts with each other and reach consensus on answers. \r\n\r\nIn addition to students displaying their knowledge of vital signs, I also saw students learning to collaborate with each other. They learned valuable lessons in active listening, hearing each other's point of view, and reaching consensus on their plan of action. I am actively working on planning an escape room for my Chemistry class. So I haven't had a lot of time yet to utilize the supplies because it's been summer. But as I was organizing my lab supply room before the end of last school year, I was feeling an incredible sense of calm because I knew I now had what I needed to get the next school year off to the right start. There is so much to be stressed about as the new school year approaches and now I don't have to add to that worry things like needing to order new expo markers or glassware or chemical supplies. I'm going into the new school year next week certain that I have all the basic classroom and lab supplies that I need. I can focus instead on making sure my lesson plans are ready to go!\r\n\r\nI will also be teaching AP chemistry for the first time this year and know that I will be utilizing a lot of the lab supplies provided. The AP Chemistry test requires students have a lot of lab procedure knowledge so completing labs for that course is essential to their success on the test and often determines their likelihood of receiving college credit. The 3-D printer in my classroom has resulted in amazing engagement from my students. They were initially so interested when I started printing the hearts that would preceed our heart dissection lesson. We used the 3-D printed hearts and diagrams to learn about the structures and function of the heart. Students were able to make connections when they got to the actual heart dissection. In some cases, student had the 3-D printed heart on the lab table as a guide for identifying parts of the sheep heart. Since then, I have printed so many more manipulatives for Earth Science, Biology, and Chemistry. Soon, we will start on the design unit where students have to design a medical intervention to help a ficticious patient.
