While we practice our math facts without a calculator much of the time, there are some units where this becomes cumbersome. The calculators arrived just in time for our Perimeter, Area, Surface Area, and Volume unit, which was one of my students' least favorite units in the past. This year, with the aid of calculators, the students were engaged and working through problems more efficiently. The look on their faces when they realized they could do the calculations quickly was priceless. \r\n\r\nThe other area where the calculators were immensely helpful was in prepping for our state standardized testing. They are allowed to use a pop-up calculator on the screen for the test, but in the past many of my students did not know what many of the buttons would do. This put them at a big disadvantage compared to those who had used calculators in their classes. This year I did not have questions (which I am not allowed to answer during state testing) and the overall student anxiety during testing was lowered. I even had a student tell me they were glad I had shown them how to use the exponent button. Several of my students struggle with adding and subtracting negative numbers, and giving students their own number line where they can put their fingers on the numbers and count has led to several a-ha moments where they connect the adding and subtracting rules to the concrete number line. \r\n\r\nThe unboxing of the geomirrors was a highlight for my 8th grade class. We were working on translations, reflections, rotations, and dilations and several of them were having trouble visualizing the reflections. I heard several students comment on how cool the mirrors were, and the amazing \"Oh, I see it now\" was the icing on the cake. \r\n\r\nThe large pyramids and prisms were essential for my sixth-grade class learning the vocabulary for edges, faces, vertices, and how to name the solids. If a student incorrectly named a shape, I could hold up what they said and what the actual shape was, and they could clearly see the difference. I have never had my students catch on to the differences so quickly. Turning the abstract into something they could see and touch made learning easier and more fun. \r\n\r\nThank you for investing in my classroom and my students.
