I plan to send home books with my students so they can read to themselves, read to their siblings, and even help teach their parents how to read English. The U.S. has had the hope to have students read well by 3rd grade. Without having reading materials in homes, it is very hard for some students to accomplish this goal. Many of my students come from families that are not literate in their home language putting these dual language learners at a learning deficit. Having books at home will help them increase the time they are able to read therefore increasing their literacy.
