They are doubled up, that is they live with other family members due to lack of affordable housing. Others live in shelters or hotels. Last year there were 67 students in my program. This year there are 41 students and it is the month of October. I anticipate more participants as the year progresses. Some of the students come from families that have been adversely impacted by immigration laws. Others are living in single family homes because either the mother or father was incarcerated. For all these reasons, they cannot afford a house or apartment. The classroom materials might appear to be minor contributions to most of us. The pens, pencils, erasers, line paper and other school supplies, however, made an enormous difference for my students. Their parents cannot afford them. In addition, these parents have little time to shop for their children. \r\n Some families have several children in my school. They were fortunate because I was able to provide them with supplies as well. My students were happy and relieved that I could provide them with classroom materials as evident in the thank you cards. One student wrote, \"Thank you so much. My parents are going through a lot. This project is awesome. I am glad they don't have to buy my school stuff..\" The project is a monetary relief because it enables parents to focus on other financial responsibilities. It brought parents a ray of hope. \r\n Each student received a pack of paper, several pens, pencils, glue sticks, a highlighter and a folder. They each received an eraser as well. The \"Bucs\" were able to use donated line paper, pens, and pencils to complete their classwork, They no longer received zeros for not being prepared. Preparation is a key factor in school success. The glue was used to complete projects in Art, History and Science. The folders were instrumental in keeping students organized. They were also used to secure home learning assignments. Highlighters were used to bring attention to key dates, people and places discussed in History courses. This project has already made such a difference in the way my students participate and express themselves. For many ninth graders, speaking up in a high school classroom can be intimidating. They are adjusting to new teachers, new classmates, higher expectations, and a completely different environment. Some students know the answer but are still hesitant to raise their hands because they are afraid of being wrong or drawing attention to themselves.\r\n\r\nThe individual whiteboards have helped change that. Students who may not normally volunteer to speak are much more willing to write down an answer, hold up their boards, and participate without feeling the same pressure they might feel speaking in front of the entire class. Over time, I am seeing that small steps help build their confidence. They are becoming more comfortable sharing their thoughts, taking chances, and realizing that their ideas matter.\r\n\r\nThe materials have also given my students more opportunities to express themselves creatively. Whether they are drawing, designing, brainstorming, or turning an idea into something visual, I am seeing sides of my students that do not always come out through a traditional assignment. The new equipment allows students to move beyond simply learning about broadcasting and actually experience what it is like to work in a real production environment. Students are learning how to operate microphones, set up lighting, work with cameras, record quality audio, conduct interviews, produce our school morning announcements, and collaborate as a professional production team. These hands-on experiences help students develop communication, problem-solving, creativity, teamwork, and technical skills that they can use in college and future careers.\r\n\r\nWhat excites my students most is seeing how professional their work can look and sound when they have the right equipment. The new microphones have helped them hear the difference between basic audio and clear, broadcast-quality sound, while the lighting equipment has shown them how dramatically proper lighting can improve an interview, announcement, or video project. They especially enjoy seeing the finished product on screen and knowing that something they helped create is being viewed by students and staff throughout the school.\r\n\r\nI have also seen students who were initially quiet or hesitant become much more involved after having the opportunity to work with the new technology. Some students who were uncomfortable being in front of the camera discovered that they excel behind the scenes as camera operators, audio technicians, lighting crew members, directors, or editors. Others have gained confidence as anchors and interviewers. The technology gives every student an opportunity to find a role where they can contribute and be successful.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, this equipment has transformed our classroom into a place where students learn by doing.
