I work in a Title 1 school in Homestead, Florida. Some of the students in my school come from rough neighborhoods, and have experienced things I would never wish on my worst enemy. The year before COVID, we were having a lot of fights in the hallways. After Christmas, I decided to brighten up the hallways and make it a more cheery place; a place where students wouldn't want to fight. I brought in the Christmas lights that decorated my home and decided to hang them on the ceiling panels of my hallway, the west side of the second floor of the second building. I didn't have enough money to buy lights for all of our 5 buildings but that is my vision in the next few years, to light up every hallway. I started with some mismatched Christmas lights on the edge of the ceiling wall and then a few fairy lights to go across the ceiling hallway in a criss-cross fashion. After a few weeks, I noticed that not a single fight occurred in my hallway nor did any of the kids mess with the lights. Students were now taking the long way to classes just so they could pass by the "fun" hallway, as they were calling it around the school and they were telling me the hallway made them happy!! With time, students wanted to make the hallway look even better. Then they began asking me when I was going to buy LED lights to put up in the hallway, and haven't stopped asking. The LED lights will light up the entire hallway of our floor and will improve mental health.
