It is really important we learn from history.\" A girl in my class said, \"Some of these books share important lessons. They don't always treat us like little kids and I really like that.\" \r\n Our class has been utilizing these texts to facilitate important discussions and build empathy and understanding. As an educator, I know my lesson plans extend beyond academic target skills. I hope to support the development of critical thinkers and lifelong learners who advocate for themselves and others. These books are absolutely a step toward opening up windows to different perspectives and creating a more inclusive world. For many, this was the first time they've had a book that truly matches both their reading level and maturity level.\r\n\r\nThese Hi-Lo books were especially transformative. Middle school students who often feel limited to \"little kid books\" because of their reading challenges were thrilled to discover engaging, exciting, and age-appropriate stories that they could actually enjoy. \r\n\r\nTo extend the impact beyond our classroom, we also provided families with a booklet based on the \"Four Resources Model.\" This resource is designed to guide parents and caregivers in supporting their child's literacy journey. It includes meaningful questions and activities that encourage higher-order thinking and help students build comprehension, decoding, and critical thinking skills. These materials ensure that the skills we're developing in class can grow even during breaks.\r\n\r\nThanks to the new books, students are experiencing the joy of reading in ways that many had not before.
