Across all grade levels, from K-6, my students are rocking and strumming along with different songs during music. My sixth graders have been working on adding ukuleles to accompany \"Best Day of My Life\" for their upcoming graduation ceremony. My fifth graders worked on \"Somewhere Over the Rainbow\" with their ukuleles. My fourth graders used four chords to accompany their performance of \"House of Gold\" during class. And my lower grades have practiced holding the ukuleles correctly, strumming their ukuleles in rhythm together, and identifying specific strings to eventually use to play melodies and songs. I continue assisting my students with severe cognitive, physical, and social disabilities as they strum the ukuleles, sometimes singing with it, other times really engaging with the instrument and music. \r\n\r\nLooking forward to the year ahead, I plan on using the ukuleles to aid in musical compositions. I would like to explore different tunings so students could strum the open strings and play full chords without having to worry about placing their fingers on the correct frets. As the ukuleles have become a more common fixture in music class routines and activities, I want to hit the ground running next year and get the kids stemming and playing right away to have more kids performing for school-wide concerts and more informal in-class concerts. \r\n\r\nThank you again for this donation in helping engage my kiddos in different ways!
