Students are much more engaged when they can interact with high-quality materials that bring language and culture to life.\r\nThe karaoke machine has quickly become one of the most exciting additions to our classroom. My students absolutely love using music to practice pronunciation, build confidence speaking Spanish, and celebrate Hispanic culture in a fun and memorable way. Even some of my quieter students have come out of their shells during our music and speaking activities. It has helped create a joyful classroom environment where students feel comfortable participating and taking risks with the language.\r\nThe food and school supplies have also made a tremendous difference. Having snacks available helps students feel cared for and supported, especially during long school days, and the classroom supplies ensure students have what they need to be successful and participate fully. These items may seem simple, but they truly help create a sense of belonging and community in our classroom.\r\nYour kindness and generosity have directly impacted my students every single day. Those were super helpful, and I'm appreciative for the support. However, the results from this project have surpassed anything I could have hoped for. My class set of Trevor Noah's Born a Crime have been a huge hit, and it's all thanks to donors like you. \r\nTo end the year in my English 3-4 Honors class, we've begun reading our copies of Born a Crime, and students are loving it. Usually with a whole class text, there are a fair number of students whose attention is split, and miss their \"cue\" when something funny or shocking happens. Not so with Born a Crime. There's muffled giggles and shocked gasps at all the right places. When Trevor writes of his familial affection, they say, \"awww\". When the stakes are raised and injustice rears its ugly head, they whisper, \"no way!\" to each other. When we finish our scheduled chapter, students struggle to disengage, asking to read \"just a little more\" before moving on to the next activity. Let me tell you, as a teacher, it's music to my ears. I hope it is to yours, as well. \r\nWhen considering our writing, I've been so excited to create our own memoir assignments, which I've included in pictures. This will culminate in the semester final, in which students are making a time capsule to emulate their sophomore year of high school. This will span from music favorites in a playlist to research on sleep schedules and cell phone usage. It's a delight to see reading and writing come together this way, and to make that happen, you must start with the right book. \r\nAs I mentioned in my application, there is value in rigorous, traditional texts. But when it comes to modern students, they often need a taste of the modern text. Again, thank you so much for your support. We'll continue to read and protect these books for years to come, starting today.","fullyFundedDate":1768333997426,"projectUrl":"project/modern-memoirs-class-set-of-trevor-noah/10011061/","projectTitle":"Modern Memoirs: Class Set of Trevor Noah's Born a Crime","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Kelly","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9654207_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1742531069690","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/kellymcqueen"},{"teacherId":4974975,"projectId":9977462,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous support of our CLS classroom. The arrival of these French comic books—or *Bandes Dessinées*, as they are known in the Francophone world—has sparked a level of excitement and engagement that I haven't seen in years. In a world where students are often intimidated by the complexities of a second language, your gift has provided them with a vibrant, accessible, and culturally rich gateway into French. These texts are far more than just supplemental reading; they are essential pedagogical tools that bridge the gap between rote memorization and true linguistic immersion. By funding this project through DonorsChoose, you haven't just bought books; you have invested in the confidence and curiosity of my students, showing them that their journey into the French language is supported by a community that believes in the power of global education.\r\n\r\nOne of the most significant lessons these new texts introduce is the concept of visual literacy combined with linguistic decoding. In French comic books, students are introduced to high-frequency vocabulary and authentic idiomatic expressions that are often absent from standard textbooks. They are learning how to interpret social cues, tone, and context through the \"9th Art\" (as comics are affectionately called in France). These books introduce lessons in onomatopoeia, register (distinguishing between formal and informal speech), and cultural nuances that define everyday life in French-speaking countries. By interacting with titles like *Astérix*, *Tintin*, and modern graphic novels, students are developing their interpretive reading skills. They are learning to derive meaning from the synthesis of word and image, which significantly lowers their \"affective filter\"—the anxiety often associated with language learning. Instead of getting frustrated by a word they don't recognize, they use the illustrations to infer meaning, allowing them to maintain the flow of the story and stay motivated to continue.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nIn my classroom, reading has been completely transformed. It is no longer a passive or solitary chore; it has become a dynamic and social experience. During our \"Lecture Libre\" (Free Reading) sessions, the atmosphere changes from a traditional instructional setting to a bustling literary lounge. Reading looks like a student curled up in a corner chair, so engrossed in a mystery that they forget they are reading in a foreign language. It looks like a pair of students huddled over a single volume of *Lou!*, whispering to each other as they try to translate a particularly funny joke or slang term. You can hear the soft rustle of pages and the occasional chuckle as someone discovers a clever play on words. This \"low-stakes\" environment allows students to take risks with their comprehension. It shifts the focus from \"getting the right answer\" to \"enjoying the narrative,\" which is where true fluency begins. Because of your donation, our library is now a place of discovery where students can choose stories that resonate with their own interests, whether that be history, fantasy, or contemporary teenage life.\r\n\r\nI have been particularly moved by how these books have impacted specific groups of students, especially my reluctant readers and visual learners. I have one student who previously struggled with traditional text-heavy assignments, often feeling overwhelmed by long paragraphs of French prose. However, since the comic books arrived, this student has been the first to grab a new volume every single day. The visual scaffolding of the graphic novel format has given them a sense of mastery and accomplishment they hadn't felt before. For this student, being able to finish an entire book in French—even a comic—is a massive milestone that has boosted their overall participation in class. Similarly, my more advanced students are relishing the challenge of the more complex graphic novels, which introduce them to regional dialects and historical contexts that provide a much deeper understanding of the Francophone world. Your kindness has ensured that every student, regardless of their current proficiency level, has something that speaks to them and challenges them to grow. Thank you for making our classroom a more inclusive, exciting, and literate place to learn French.","fullyFundedDate":1769139248308,"projectUrl":"project/support-literacy-and-culture-the-french/10031297/","projectTitle":"Support Literacy and Culture: The French Comic Book Project","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Lopez","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-9_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8163197"},{"teacherId":8110817,"projectId":10002958,"letterContent":"I want to specifically speak to the printer. Because of your kindness, my students now have access to resources that are already making a meaningful difference in their learning environment. Your willingness to invest in our classroom has created a space that is more organized, flexible, and responsive to the needs of every student who walks through the door.\r\nOne of the most exciting additions has been the yoga balls used for flexible seating. Many of my students learn best when they are able to move, wobble, or change positions, and these seating options allow them to do just that while staying focused on their work. The yoga balls have helped students regulate their energy, improve their posture, and stay engaged during lessons. I have already noticed increased attention and fewer disruptions, simply because students are more comfortable and their sensory needs are being met.\r\nThe baskets and organizational materials you provided have also transformed our classroom. Having clearly labeled baskets for books, supplies, and learning materials has made it easier for students to work independently and take responsibility for their space. Our classroom now runs more smoothly because students can quickly find what they need and transition between activities with confidence. Organization may seem like a small thing, but for my students, it makes a huge difference in creating a calm and predictable learning environment.","fullyFundedDate":1768268559283,"projectUrl":"project/make-mrs-ashbys-classroom-fun/9995736/","projectTitle":"Make Mrs. Ashby’s Classroom Fun","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Ashby","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-5_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8131108"},{"teacherId":8171978,"projectId":10046008,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your incredible generosity in supporting my classroom. Because of you, my students now have the essential supplies—from colorful paper and pens to dry erase markers and rewards—that turn a lesson into an interactive experience.\r\n\r\nThe impact of these materials is visible every day. We are using the Expo markers and whiteboards for formative assessment, as they allow me to see who is mastering the concepts and who still needs more time. They also serve as tools for solidifying knowledge. Whiteboards are great in games as a low-stakes way to answer, yet also increase excitement, and we know that a positive emotional response helps memorization. The index cards allow students to take notes on the essentials and decrease their anxiety going into exams. They also give me a tool that helps students pay attention to feedback. When students know they can use my feedback as notes on an upcoming test, they pay attention to it and write it down.\r\n\r\nFor high schoolers, the complexity of Spanish grammar and the sheer amount of vocabulary to be memorized can be overwhelming, but the colored paper you provided helps keep them organized. By color-coding vocabulary and grammar notes, the students now have visual scaffolding that makes their study sessions more efficient and intuitive. The candy you provided makes an excellent reward after games which have required students to call on classroom learning to earn points. \r\n\r\nMy goal is to empower each student in my classroom to become bilingual and possess high-level intercultural skills.
