Learning to write is a process - and it is one best taught through modeling. Anyone can assign an essay, but that does little in terms of showing students the process of writing - which involves brainstorming, revising and editing. It can be frustrating to try and write an entire essay or narrative, live, with a class, but it is truly the most effective way to help students understand the writing process. Showing my students firsthand that all writers - even English teachers, make mistakes on a rough draft, is crucial in building confident writers. Good teaching - like good writing, involves a lot of showing, rather than just telling; with the use of this document camera, I'll be able to model a variety of lessons. Peer-editing can be beneficial for helping students identify weaknesses in writing, but without showing students how to effectively identify those weaknesses and how to offer suggestions and advice for improvement, students usually resort to reading over a peer's paper quickly and replying that everything looks good.
