It has been great seeing the children light up at the idea of role playing. These are students that usually do not appropriately play with most toys and that do not show interest in imaginary play unless being showed how to do so. These costumes have brought out something in them. They are excited to try them on and it has helped them gain interest in the. lessons surrounding the idea of community and the community helpers. It has helped the students engage with the lessons in a way I was unable to elicit from them before. Throughout the years I have had students with a variety of sensory needs. Some of them respond very well to having something weighted on them to help calm them and get them ready to participate with the class. The weighted blanket for the lap has been helpful with more that one student. When they are tasked with sitting at the table to complete an activity sometimes all they need to help them focus is the lap blanket for a little bit. It has made a big difference in their attending to task and hence, learning alongside their peers. These play doh and scissor activities will help strengthen their hands in a. fun way where the students do not even realize that they are participating in an educational and helpful activity.
