Many of my students are non-verbal children diagnosed with Autism. Some have limited interests and this proves difficult when attempting to motivate them in order to learn to communicate. Communication may take on many different forms. Some students communicate using gestures, others single or fragmented words, while some rely on picture symbols to make their wants known. However, many of my students must be taught the skill of communicating with intent. Learning that their "voice", in whatever capacity possible, is powerful and meaningful! While it is not always an easy road, the moment a student makes the connection that their intent might have an effect on someone else is priceless!
