At the end of last year, when I knew I would be in Early Childhood, I requested a color printer, knowing how essential it would be in my new room. Due to budgeting, this request could not be met. Happily, throughout the summer I received enough donations from individuals in this community to have this Donors Choose project fulfilled, and we were able to begin the year with our new printer.\r\n\r\nThe ability to print color, high-definition photos for our classroom means that students have pictures that allow them to more fully and meaningfully navigate the day's learning. In the morning, each child hangs up his or her coat and bag in a cubby that shows their parents' pictures. These pictures are printed on our printer, laminated, and affixed with velcro tape to the back of the cubby. These pictures work as a reassuring object that the children can and do return to throughout the day. It's not unusual for our three-year-olds to hold the laminated picture when settling down for Rest Time. We also have printed out photographs of the children in their daily schedule. Seeing a picture of themselves doing a specific activity makes a much stronger impact than seeing a cartoon or generic free use image. Additionally, photographs of all the children grace our Interest Centers, with pictures of the class building in the Blocks Area, pictures of the children visiting a wood-working shop in the area where their tools are kept, etc. We also use the printer to print out labels and images that provide pictorial support for our teaching, such as a photograph of bread in the Play Kitchen. We know we were lucky to have this large item funded, and absolutely love the fact that we can make such high-quality learning materials with it. Because it is an Eco Printer, we've also been able to print large quantities without even having to refill it with ink once so far this year. Because we asked for replacement ink, we won't have to fund those replacements ourselves.\r\n\r\nOur classroom would be duller, emptier, and would not reflect our students in their absolute individuality without this item. We thank you so much for your generosity to usin allowing us to enhance our practice with it. You have allowed us to bring color, vibrance and the faces of our students into direct view. You have allowed us to use images to teach, to make ideas accessible, and even, in the case of the family photos to address the social emotional needs of our students.","fullyFundedDate":1755712558927,"projectUrl":"project/being-seen-and-seeing-yourself-social/9402976/","projectTitle":"Being Seen, and Seeing Yourself: Social Justice for Early Childhood","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Czapsky","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3988484_orig.png?crop=974,974,x0,y152&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1739024310636","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/3988484"},{"teacherId":4731813,"projectId":9513628,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for supporting our classroom! The colored pencils have also been a huge help—because they are organized and easy to track, far fewer supplies go missing throughout the day.\r\n\r\nThe magnets you funded have been incredibly useful for displaying charts, visual aids, and directions on our board so students can refer back to them while working. They help keep lessons organized and visible, especially for my students who benefit from visual reminders. The laminating sheets have also made a big impact; we use them to preserve frequently used resources, center activities, and reference cards so they last all year instead of needing constant replacement.\r\n\r\nThese supplies have become part of our daily routine and are truly supporting student learning, independence, and organization. We began by doing some research into what the word sustainability means, and how it relates to city living. Then, we began to design our own versions of sustainable cities. The designs began with reading and writing about cities around the world that are committed to sustainable practices. Once students had a background in this understanding, they worked to create a dream city that had green living spaces, urban farms, clean energy transportation, and supportive environments for flora and fauna to flourish. Once they had a vision, they used the materials in the Donors Choose project to create 3D models. \r\nThe students were so excited to bring their ideas to life! We used recycled materials, along with the Legos, clay, yarn, tape, and solar panels. Hands-on learning fosters a high level of engagement, and helps kids problem-solve in real time. When they were creating their models, they had to discuss their ideas and any problems they encountered as a team, which promoted teamwork. The hands-on building also helped to connect the younger kids with the older kids. The creativity of the 3rd graders inspired the older kids to engage again with a sense of play. The experience of making this project together brought them a deeper understanding of sustainability, and urban planning. Having access to such a rich range of materials enhanced this learning experience by allowing them to create concrete, 3D models of worlds that otherwise would have existed only on paper.","fullyFundedDate":1733192718834,"projectUrl":"project/sustainable-cities/8979048/","projectTitle":"Sustainable Cities","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Parker","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-9_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9850896"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_51","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":575,"numTeachers":57,"percentFrplEligible":73,"percentAsian":54,"percentBlack":13,"percentWhite":6,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":21,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"10.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":63.9,"schoolId":51,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about PS 126 Jacob August Riis on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"PS 126 Jacob August Riis","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/new-york-city-dept-of-ed/ps-126-jacob-august-riis/51"}
