My students were able to access important historical information and practice their literacy in their new language in an accessible way through the graphic novel format, and I used it to build a comprehensive unit that included listening, reading, writing, and speaking opportunities. It was rewarding to me to see the interest my students had in learning the story that George Takei shares and in exploring that part of the country's history, and I was impressed by the questions that the book sparked and the writing they created and the discussions they participated in as a result of what they learned from the book. We also compared the story to another account of the interment camps from a Scholastic Action article, as you can see in the attached photos, which did even more to support their literacy and language development. We used the mounting tape to attach the chargers and storage caddies to each table to ensure they were always where they were needed, which minimized disruptions during class. The storage caddies were filled with the supplies they need for each lesson, including pencils, highlighters, markers, erasers, and glue, making them easily accessible. And the disinfectant wipes are useful to keep our tables and learning supplies clean to minimize illnesses in our classes. My students and I are extremely grateful for all of your support.
