This year I will use the caterpillar vouchers to have real, live caterpillars delivered to my classroom this spring. \r\n\r\nThe first step of this unit will include the kids examining, measuring and learning how tiny caterpillars are when they're first born. We will measure their growth daily and record it in our journals. Next my students will see the caterpillars multiply in size before turning themselves into chrysalis form. Then we'll wait until butterflies emerge from the chrysalis. This is always a magical moment for the kids to experience. The learning doesn't stop after the butterflies emerge either, we can then move on to ways butterflies are useful to the earth, we can learn about other animal lifecycles and we can learn about issues like habitat loss. I'd then watch their faces light up with curiosity as they'd read their magazine. A favorite in my class was the one on troll statues found in different parks. Even my most reluctant readers would try to figure out the details because the magazines use high interest materials for their topics.
