As English department co-chair for one of its high schools, I wanted to bring attention to the power we have as educators to help students develop an authentic relationship with their own writing. \r\n\r\nBeyond catching them at plagiarism, we have a role in helping them embrace their own critical and creative process, their own voice and style as expressions of identity that must never be supplanted by AI. Shifting the way we teach writing to emphasize process instead of product is one of Warner's primary insights in the book, and I knew this was worth sharing with colleagues. My students, and I hope my colleagues' students, felt the impact of Warner's lessons in writing instruction that valued student agency, authentic engagement and consciousness of audience and purpose over imitative products. I hope and believe his ideas and the book will have a lasting positive impact on students at our schools.","fullyFundedDate":1757256306293,"projectUrl":"project/writing-our-humanity-in-the-age-of-ai/9652848/","projectTitle":"Writing Our Humanity in the Age of AI","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Harris","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7628748_orig.jpg?crop=2018,2018,x301,y649&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1659944450207","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7628748"},{"teacherId":9045206,"projectId":10097389,"letterContent":"On behalf of the entire Montgomery High School community, I want to express my sincere thanks for your donation to our Donors Choose campaign. Most of the supplies needed are basic necessities that are needed to keep a classroom running such as ink, paper clips, binder/printer paper and more. At the beginning of the year, we were given a budget of $0. Yes, that's correct; zero. It was a new low for me to have to face that we are simply no longer honestly and earnestly funding public education. In that moment of truth, I did not despair because I know that there are supporters out there through organizations like Donors Choose. \r\n\r\nIt is with your donations of basic supplies that I have been able to not just keep my classroom functioning but we are thriving. My Spanish 2 honors students let me know that they were having a hard time visualizing the novel. I printed pictures of the characters, scenes from the book and pictures of the book's location of Costa Rica. This has helped them immensely. The book was brought to life on the book wall in the back of the classroom along with the featured chapter of the week on the main whiteboard. \r\n\r\nIn addition, I finally implemented library time at the beginning of two class periods a week for my higher level students. Students sit and read books from the classroom library. Many of the books purchased truly elevated the caliber of our library. Many students were able to pick up books about Michael Jordan, Selena, the How I survived series and books such as the biography of the Mexican American astronaut José Moreno Hernandez. I plan on bringing these books to life with mini video reviews performed by these students. \r\n\r\nAll in all if you walked in our classroom you would never know that we received zero funding this year and that is thanks to you! Thank you for looking out for students at Montgomery High School, teachers like me and funding public education. Your thoughtfulness means so much to me and my students.","fullyFundedDate":1766440291484,"projectUrl":"project/ordinary-supplies-become-possibility-cr/9890676/","projectTitle":"Ordinary Supplies Become Possibility, Creativity & Imagination","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Coston","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-1_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9030700"},{"teacherId":3623022,"projectId":8668202,"letterContent":"Thank you so much!!! The kids have also been able to use them during se dory breaks and to support them when they are working. It has been so great to have a wide variety of sensory toys for the kids to choose from. Our district made the shift to be 1-1 a few years ago and due to financial issues, will be shifting away from that with seemingly few plans to provide technology once the current devices wear out. I am working on shifting things back to handwritten for multiple reasons, but having some chromebooks in the classroom for everyone's access is essential for certain projects and assignments. \r\n\r\nCurrently, my students are about to design their own illustrations for scenes from the novel Life of Pi, and having digital tools gives some support to students who are less confident in their artistic and design skills. My juniors are also investigating global issues related to illustrations critiquing societal issues (environment, consumerism, technology). When they don't have their usual device, this enables them to stay current with the assignment because they have access to a backup. There have also been times when students have checked out the Chromebooks for use in other classes or at home because they needed extended time, and having multiple devices means I can allow them and still have spares for the other classes.\r\n\r\nTruly, many thanks for your willingness to contribute to school projects such as this one.
