My special day class is filled with a fabulous group of 7th and 8th graders with moderate to severe disabilities, such as autism and intellectual disabilities. Students come from a range of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds, including minorities and high poverty. Students in my class work to achieve academic and functional skills, while becoming as independent as possible. They also spend two periods of their day in electives and PE with their general education peers. We have cultivated a warm, welcoming community built on trust and high expectations for all students.
