The main stay of forensics is DNA. My students know that DNA is used in solving many crimes and exonerating people that have been wrongly convicted, but they don't know what DNA testing really is. This lab has allows my students to conduct the equivalent of an actual DNA test. To restrict the DNA, pipette it into gels, once the DNA fragments are separated, stain the gels and see the bar code that is the banding pattern of DNA. Then compare the DNA to that of the victim and suspects.\r\n\r\nReal life, hands-on labs are what makes my class so different than other classes. While much of high school is learning a set curriculum and receiving grades for accomplishments in that curriculum, students also learn more informally all of the time through their own interests and questions. That is where having a current, interesting, and well-stocked library is so important. \r\n\r\nFurthermore, although students may take a course at a certain point in their academic journey, they might need information or inspiration at times other than when they have a teacher who can guide them. For example, we often have students looking at our Health books long after they have taken their freshman year Health class.\r\n\r\nThe books in this project range from the practical (Super Easy Teen Cookbook) to the historical (The Woman All Spies Fear) to the informative (The Economics Book). Hopefully, many students will find these books accessible and interesting and educational, and we can point students with questions to these new resources.","fullyFundedDate":1742920936020,"projectUrl":"project/nonfiction-for-learning-and-inspiration/8963556/","projectTitle":"Nonfiction for Learning and Inspiration","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Xavier","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8995414_orig.jpg?crop=377,377,x140,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1680033097015","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8995414"},{"teacherId":9694526,"projectId":8684382,"letterContent":"My students and I thank you wholeheartedly for this wonderful opportunity you have provided us that allows our entire class to do our chemistry labs simultaneously and learn from each other while exploring and collaboraring. However, we have been limited in the number of soldering stations we run due to limits on ventilation. Having eight small filtering fans has provided us with a major increase in the number of soldering stations and has cut the student wait time dramatically.\r\n\r\nWhile I anticipated a change in workflow with the new fans, I did not anticipate the improvement in work quality. It turns out that with less rushing to finish (and let some one else use the station) students are able to do a careful job and achieve greater success. \r\n\r\nIn addition, the added fans have reduced student (and teacher stress). For the reasons noted above, students are not constantly waiting to get access to a solder station or urging those using the stations to hurry up. The new calmer shop has been another benefit.\r\n\r\nMoving ahead, we hope to increase the number of electronics projects students can work on now that we have better ventilation.","fullyFundedDate":1723946611268,"projectUrl":"project/breathe-easy-while-you-work/8658271/","projectTitle":"Breathe Easy While You Work","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Johnson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-9_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9670337"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_4246","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":2168,"numTeachers":104,"percentFrplEligible":8,"percentAsian":35,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":44,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":8,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"20.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":90.0,"schoolId":4246,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Monte Vista High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Monte Vista High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/san-ramon-valley-unified-school-district/monte-vista-high-school/4246"}
