Since receiving them, my students have been using the mats during our weekly yoga and mindfulness sessions. These sessions have become a favorite part of the week, allowing students to stretch, strengthen, and reset their focus through guided movement and breathing exercises. One memorable moment was during our first full-class yoga flow—students were fully engaged, moving in unison, and several shared afterward how calm and centered they felt. The mats have made a huge difference in comfort, safety, and enthusiasm, especially for students who were hesitant to participate before.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the yoga mats laid out in the gym, their faces lit up with excitement. Many asked, \"Are these really for us?\" and couldn't wait to try them out. Now, we're building on this momentum by incorporating short yoga breaks into other parts of the day and exploring how mindfulness can support focus and emotional regulation across subjects. Our next step is a student-led wellness project, where small groups will create their own short yoga routines and teach them to the class. These tools have made a profound difference in our speech and language sessions, allowing students, many of whom are nonverbal or minimally verbal, to participate actively by directing, requesting, and commenting using pre-recorded messages. With the push of a button, they can now express preferences, answer questions, and share their voices in ways that were not previously possible!\r\n\r\nThe impact goes beyond functional communication. For many of our students, these switches have opened the door to a deeper understanding of cause and effect of communication, the foundational idea that their actions can influence others and their environment. This growth in communicative intent and awareness is not only a critical step in language development, but also important in building confidence and connection. We are incredibly grateful to those who helped fund these supports! Your contributions have empowered our students and made their voices heard!
