All of these seemingly little things make big difference in day to day life.\r\n\r\nFor instance in todays classroom the computer charger is symbolic of staying connected to the learning process. We plug in our chrome books and we plug into to our learning capability. As we more and more move away from a dependence on paper as the primary way of turning in work, having a charger is paramount to having a successfully running class. So thank you for helping to provide a set of chargers for the room. \r\n\r\nI sincerely hope you know the impact you are making in our class pays its self forward. The narrative structure of James pushed these conversations further than I could have imagined.\r\n\r\nAdditionally, my students were so prepared for the author visit. They were responsible for introducing Percival Everett, they asked deep and meaningful questions of the author, and reflected deeply on what they took away from the experience. The author and the radio hosts were blown away by the preparation and engagement of our students.\r\n\r\nThis opportunity would not have happened without your generosity. Many of them have never used a real compass or read a map beyond a phone app. Giving them the opportunity to hold these tools and navigate their world will spark curiosity, problem-solving, and teamwork.\r\n\r\nI am requesting classroom sets of compasses and maps to create an engaging, hands-on STEM project where students explore the science of navigation.\r\nI need a cart to transport materials for the project. While GPS technology is everywhere, the science behind navigation—magnetism, orientation, and mapping—remains essential for STEM fields ranging from engineering to geology to aerospace.\r\n\r\nWith compasses and maps, my students will learn how magnetism interacts with Earth's poles and affects navigation.. practice orienteering and design their own map-based challenges on our school grounds, explore careers in cartography, environmental science, aviation, surveying, and space exploration—fields that depend on navigation and geospatial skills. And kids will work in teams to problem-solve and apply real-world STEM concepts.\r\n\r\nIn most classrooms, students may see a picture of a compass in a textbook, but rarely do they use one. By combining compasses, maps, and STEM career exploration, this project goes beyond the ordinary. Students won't just learn about navigation—they will experience it through experiments and challenges that bring magnetism, physics, and geography to life.\r\n\r\nThis project is action-packed. Students will move, measure, and explore—navigating scavenger hunts, creating their own maps, and applying math and science in real-world contexts. Their learning won't be passive—it will be active, creative, and memorable. This project ignites curiosity by connecting a simple tool—the compass—to exciting STEM careers and discoveries. I'm thrilled to let you know that our project, \"Keeping Students Informed, Engaged, and Reading,\" was fully funded. Because of you, we have secured a year's worth of Scholastic Choices, Action, and Upfront magazines, and they are already getting tons of use! This wasn't just a purchase of paper; it was an investment in making our 9th-grade Language Arts class feel current and genuinely relevant to what's happening in the world.\r\n\r\nWhat We're Actually Doing with the Magazines\r\nMany of you are readers, but might wonder what teaching with these looks like. Honestly, it's a huge boost for everyone. For my students who are still building their academic English (our multilingual learners), the Action and Choices magazines are a complete game-changer. They get to read about important topics without the text being overwhelmingly difficult, which really builds their confidence and vocabulary.\r\n\r\nPlus, the Choices magazines have these fantastic little debate sections on current teen issues like social media challenges or vaping. We use these as social-emotional warmups at the start of class, giving students a safe space to practice flexing their argumentative and persuasive skills before we dive into a heavy essay. Then, for all students, Upfront brings in high-quality journalism that directly connects to our argument analysis unit. The articles are perfect for showing them how good writers make a case, and we're using them as real-world mentor texts.\r\n\r\nThe Reading Climate is Different\r\nBefore the magazines, getting some students excited about nonfiction could feel like a push. Now, reading looks like students eagerly dissecting articles on current events or debating a tricky moral issue they found in a feature story. It's fantastic! I have one student who has always been really quiet in class, but an Upfront article turned him into our resident expert on a global issue, and now he's confidently leading discussions. These magazines are making nonfiction a source of joy and critical thinking, ensuring my students leave 9th grade ready to engage with the world as informed citizens.
