Having dedicated places for our supplies has made it much easier for students to gather what their team needs, return materials when they are finished, and take ownership of our classroom space. For some of my students, this was the very first novel they have ever been able to call their own.\r\n\r\nThrough this text, students are developing important reading and critical thinking skills. We are learning how authors develop characters, create conflict, and use voice to tell a story. Students are practicing skills such as analyzing character motivations, making inferences, identifying themes, and citing textual evidence to support their thinking. The novel also opens meaningful conversations about perseverance, identity, family struggles, and making positive choices despite difficult circumstances. Because the story feels authentic and relatable, students are deeply engaged in discussions and eager to share their perspectives.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom has become much more interactive and collaborative. Students participate in partner discussions, small-group conversations, annotation activities, and reflective writing assignments connected to the novel. It has been amazing to watch reluctant readers become active participants because they genuinely connect with Ghost's experiences and personality. During independent reading time, students are often so focused that the room becomes completely silent except for pages turning.\r\n\r\nSeveral students in particular have especially connected with the book. One student who previously avoided reading now volunteers to read aloud because he relates to Ghost's determination and humor. Another student has started journaling about her own experiences after seeing how the novel addresses personal struggles and growth.
