I have selected certain objects to be used as incentives for positive behavior. We have a Positive Behavior Incentive Program called PBIS. Students earn "points" for displaying the character traits of being POSITIVE, being ACCOUNTABLE, being CONSIDERATE, and being TRUSTWORTHY. The students then get the opportunity to "shop" with the points they have earned. I have found that students love to spend their points on fun items, such as the bubble poppers and water bottles. I also am sponsoring a NASA Club this year. The students in this club are designing a robotic lunar vehicle that can dig and transport lunar soil. When they are not working on their designs, I would like to provide the LEGO set as a group activity. These same students will be interested in the NASA stickers and the artwork. My teaching assignment is 8th grade science. The students are learning about forces and motion, energy, engineering design, magnetism, waves, heredity, and natural selection. One of our NVACS is related to forces and motion: For any pair of interacting objects, the force exerted by the first object on the second object is equal in strength to the force that the second object exerts on the first, but in the opposite direction (Newton’s third law). (MS-PS2-1) I will use the Newton's Cradle to demonstrate this principle. The students will also be able to purchase miniature Newton's Cradles using earned points. One of my classes is an advisory class called Titan House Time. This class is used to help students build leadership skills and learn relationship norms and boundaries. The games will be used occasionally during this class time to provide a social outlet for the students while enforcing the idea of following rules.
